Snowden has been granted 1-year asylum in Russia. Well done Russia!

And the UK is up for sale: "NSA pays £100m in secret funding for GCHQ"

If in the 70s, anyone told me, we'd get to a point where we feared the US more than Russia, I'd have said they were crazy, now I'm not so sure...

I agree If anyone told me in the 80s that one day I'd be proud that Russia granted political asylum to the US dissident I'd say they were crazy!

Re: NSA collecting records of all US phone calls

People should wise up to the fact that nothing can be taken for granted anymore.

Governments are doing all they can to obscure this fact and play "business as usual" - but reality proves them wrong almost every week.

Hope so; maybe Russia will sell him to the USA for a suitable price which would be a very poor result.

About "And the UK is up for sale: "NSA pays £100m in secret funding for GCHQ""

The US have been following a policy of paying for what they want for many years. 100M per year is small change versus the cost of wars.

Brown University in the form of the Costs of War project said the total cost for wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan is at least $3.2-4 trillion,
No idea if this figure is anywhere near reality but even if it is a thousand times too high then 100M per year is still small change.

Unlikely as if they were going to hold out for a payoff, they'd have dumped him by now. Russians are...practical, which means he is worth something more than a mere payoff would get them, particularly considering the ire of the US politicians right now when that doesn't really get them anything (and easier to achieve in places like, say, Afghanistan and other oil pipeline sorts of places) since this guy is just a douchebag in search of a cave.

Something doesn't add up to them finally opening the door to him so he must have something worth the trouble. I wonder if the bookies have already started making book on how long he lives....

It is - as long as you can print monopoly-money and people around the world accept it ;-)

I would *really* love to know the agenda the Russians have (beyond putting a giant egg on Barack "Nobel Peace Price" Obama's face). I doubt they did it for a couple of headlines and personal amusement.

I think what irritates politicians in the US the most is the open "serves them right" attitude the rest of the world shares - which is double the insult considering Barack Obama started as anti-unilateralist...

The Russians like the Chinese & unlike the USA have long term goals & strategies. I am sure they believe that they will get a benefit from him - whether cash or concessions.
Or maybe they will simply put him in Lublylanka & squeeze everything out of him?

Re: NSA collecting records of all US phone calls

The encrypted email service Lavabit used by Snowden has gone offline. It was one of the last secure services, and now it shuts down.

http://lavabit.com/

My Fellow Users,

I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on--the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.

What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.

This experience has taught me one very important lesson: without congressional action or a strong judicial precedent, I would _strongly_ recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States.

Sincerely,
Ladar Levison
Owner and Operator, Lavabit LLC

Defending the constitution is expensive! Help us by donating to the Lavabit Legal Defense Fund here.

Re: NSA collecting records of all US phone calls

Obama told Merkel during his last visit to Berlin in June 2013 that he has no knowledge of NSA targeting her. Now some reports show that NSA spied her since 2002 and that Obama was already informed in 2010!

Re: NSA collecting records of all US phone calls

Unusual amount of activity in my on line shop Today. Checked the monitor and there are four users with Washington DC IP addresses...

Unusual for a Switzerland only site....

More research shows the IPO does offer service in CH.

Wonders of modern technology...

There are 18 of them now - been slowly increasing all afternoon and evening - I am sure it is nothing to worry about.

Thought I was joking about the NSA but from Google
"
Nothing to identify the source, as you can see. Also significant is that the robots.txt file said "Disallow: /" so the bot shouldn't have asked for even ONE page after retrieving it. So we have a masked bot and rulebreaker here."

Still have 15 of them on line -
"Derzeit sind 15 Kunden online
Duplicate IP Addresses: 14
Total Unique Users: 1."

IP address is 38.99.82.215

Any of you technical types know how I could block them? - they are ruining the statistics in my reporting database.

Something like

<Location />
Order Allow,Deny
Allow from all
Deny from 38.99.82.0/24
</Location>

Depending on the level of control you have over the web server, packing it directly into the apache configuration would be faster.

Cogent blocks attempts to trace the final destination of the packets.

With their database of internet-traffic, the NSA would probably have more information ;-)

Re: NSA collecting records of all US phone calls

So the latest development is that NSA and GCHQ stole millions of cryptography keys for SIM cards from Gemalto...the leading provider of SIM cards to most telecom operators in the world. Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise do have Gemalto as supplier for SIM cards and already raised big concern.
So what does that mean? Basically NSA and GCHQ can spy any mobile communication (voice + data) for those stolen keys without the user or telecom operator noticing it. It means that we are no longer sure of privacy and security of all mobile transactions (payment, calls, data etc...).
I can only smile when those who pretend to defend freedom of speech in light of north-korean cybercrime commit exactly and even worse attacks on our freedom and privacy.

And in the "real" world; General David Petraeus, the pre-eminent wartime military officer of his generation, will plead guilty in a deal reached with the Justice Department to one count of passing classified information to a lover while he was director of the CIA.

Not 100% correct. And a little over-blown, IMHO.

First, to use the crypto keys, the NSA would need to have access to the mobile network from inside (in which case the mobile operator might notice). Or else set up a fake base-station ala "man in the middle" attack (in which case you can only intercept phones in a small radius of a few hundred meters).

As for payments, they normally go over SSL, which is another layer of security not involving the SIM cryto keys.
