Naw!

Russian military are there only on vacation.

One of their officers explained it all on tv a day ago.
A simple, innocent miscommunication.

A much desired destination at this time of year..........Eastern Ukraine.

Just absent-mindedly neglected to hand their weapons in before leaving their barracks.
It is against Russian military law for soldiers to fight in other countries when on vacation. Did the officer mention court martials?

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Just give Vlad enough rope and he will eventually hang himself.

Quips by him about nazi-type behaviour by the Ukranians and not-so-gentle reminders about Russia's nuclear capabilities hint at somebody who lives in his own little world.

The macho posturing will go down very well with their military and general population, though.

In the meantime, there is little we can do until he blatantly crosses the line.

Unless we get our retaliation in first!

If the West are serious then they should destroy the Russian pipelines into Europe. This will remove Putin's threats and force the European countries to implement other energy sources.

Yup.

Secretly sending your troops to die and then secretly burying them isn't going down too well with either military or public.

Quote:
"The officers with whom I've spoken are outraged. They believe that the Russian leadership has betrayed the soldiers. It's a shame to send regular armed troops disguised as partisans to a foreign country, and then to deny those losses and bury the dead secretly."

The mysterious burial of soldiers in the Pskov cemetery a few days ago alarmed human rights observers and members of the military. Shortly after the funeral, even the names of the victims and the wreaths from their army comrades were removed. While two cases of secret burial are known about, the figure is assumed to be higher.

I don't know, Esto, is Russia really that isolated? Can we really compare it to Iran 2008? Countries BRICS are willing to support Russia. Who knows who else would be willing to join them.

I was surprised the new BRICS bank uses US dollars; hard to move away from the dollar I suppose?

As already mentioned by Poptart; every cloud has a silver lining.

Good find by one of my FB colleagues:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/easte...anzigtodonetsk

70 years of hot showers and modern conveniences has made the West very very soft and forgetful. If Europe wants peace, it has to prepare for war.

Seems that Putin told the EU head that Russia could take Kiev in two weeks, link here.

This leak was not denied by Moscow so it seems that Vlad is raising the stakes

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

Russia doesn't deny Putin said "I can take Kiev in two weeks", they just say it was "taken out of context" (?) I guess like his quote of "we are a nuclear armed super power, so don't mess with us" was also taken out of context a few days earlier?

In any case, I would like to see the transcripts of the call, but I seriously doubt Russia is really going to release them. They are trying to intimidate Barroso and make him call the Kremlin and say "please don't" because they assume he doesn't want the full text of the call to be made public. I hope Barroso calls their bluff and says "go ahead and release it".

Quote:
In a letter to Barroso, Chizhov said that media reports "say you allegedly shared the content of the conversation with some of your EU colleagues, in particular attributing to the Russian president words that were clearly taken out of context."

"I am aware that the administration of the Russian President has both a written and audio recording of the telephone conversation in question and to clarify things is ready to release them if you do not inform [us] of your objections to the release in the next two days," he wrote, according to the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

More and more Russian soldiers being sent back from Ukraine in coffins. And the Kremlin keeps denying it. Putin is not only breaking international laws by sending regular Russian troops into war in another country, but he is breaking the laws of his own country as well....

Quote:
For example, near the Russian town of Pskov, close to the border with Estonia, the graves of two paratroopers, who allegedly died fighting in Ukraine, have been stripped of identifying signs. Journalists attempting to investigate the graves have received death threats, while a local opposition politician, Lev Shlosberg, was beaten after publicising the paratroopers’ mysterious deaths.

“Then there is one who managed to call his grandmother and tell her, ‘I’m being sent to Ukraine’.” Melnikova points out that the Ryazan soldiers were told that their metal identity tags – which, under normal circumstances, are used to identify dead and wounded personnel – and paperwork would be confiscated.

This is all criminal, this is all against the law – against Russia’s own law,” Melnikova says. “More people need to ask for help – even if a soldier’s dead. We will do everything we can to help, to sort the paperwork, and so on, to make sure the family’s rights are protected.”
And how is a group of Russian mothers classified as "foreign" exactly?

Quote:
Schulmann points out non-government organisations need to let the world know that Russian soldiers are being sent to fight. The authorities, for their part, appear to be catching on to the threat such NGOs pose in the face of the conflict with Ukraine: the St Petersburg branch of the Committees of Soldiers’ Mothers was declared a “foreign agent” shortly after going public with the news that an estimated 100 Russian soldiers were killed on Ukrainian territory on August 13th.

Re: World War 3 or just a local spat in Ukraine?

If you read the article in your link it states "words that were clearly taken out of context" - that is not a denial; it is a confirmation that those words were used.

Clearly it will be interesting to read the full conversation

Ah, I see esto already wrote the same answer.
I also hope Barroso agrees to release the conversation; he is leaving the job so what does he have to lose?

Poroshenko and Putin agree on a cease-fire, on a conflict Putin is not involved in. How? Magic!

International relations devolved into mafia turf wars, that's all it really is.
