Problem was that the top 30% of the class had incredible records because the school district was so competitive.
That's the optimistic interpretation. Grade inflation could be another. ;-)

Yes of course, and that is an issue - but this happens just in certain school districts with lots of resources - kids taking lots of AP classes, lots of activities and getting into the ivies.

It appears that all eight Ivies are not created equal. In a ranking of U.S. colleges by SAT score, Brown University ranked #34:

I am curious about the ambassador - she's Jewish, right? With this odd capitalization of Levine that makes it look ..... Different. LeVine?
LeVine is her husband's surname; her maiden name was Davidson.

Her husband's father, Robert LeVine, ran the Stanetsky funeral home in Boston and LeVine, rather than Levine, would be the correct spelling according to the Stanetsky website:

http://www.dignitymemorialjewish.com...s/history.page

The more I read about Amb. Suzan Davidson LeVine the more it seems that she comes from and acts in an exclusionary or non-inclusive way. While living in Seattle, she and her husband's $500,000 of political contributions mostly went to Washington and Alaskan politicians, to be expected, but also to senators Carl Levin and Joe Lieberman of Michigan and Connecticut, both of her faith. Her husband's family business focuses on Jewish clientele according to the website.

In addition to not speaking even one of the three main national languages in Switzerland, it seems that she is rather parochial. Her association with the left-wing zealot Sen. Carl Levin is also unsettling. She is unsuited to be U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and should be allowed to resign before she causes further damage.

Re: Interview with new US Ambassador

Washington politicians may finally be waking up to the danger of appointing ambassadors based on their political campaign contributions rather than their qualifications. Still, the US Senate approved the appointment of Colleen Bell, the producer of a television soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful" as US Ambassador to Hungary:

"WASHINGTON, December 2 (Sputnik) – The US Senate approved controversial political appointee Colleen Bradley Bell to be ambassador to Hungary on Tuesday, despite criticism that the fundraiser for US President Barack Obama lacked foreign policy experience.

"It is disappointing that in a transparent move, the White House and the Senate Majority Leader have chosen to prioritize doing political favors instead of working with Congress to confirm professional diplomats, further delaying our ability to fill important positions around the world," ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Republican Senator Bob Corker said in a statement following the 52-42 confirmation vote.

On the Senate floor, Republican Senator John McCain railed against Bell, describing her nomination as an "egregious example" of the Obama administration appointing unqualified ambassadors to important countries at a time when Hungary is moving closer to Russia.

"This is a totally unsuitable nominee to be ambassador to a very critical country in struggle that will go on for a long time as Colonel [Russian President] Vladimir Putin tries to extend the reach of Russia and restore the Old Russian Empire," McCain added, pointing out Bell has no foreign policy, language, cultural or economic experience that would justify her appointment as ambassador to Hungary.

Bell, a television producer, has helped Obama raise campaign contributions. McCain said he accepted the practice of appointing political appointees to Caribbean countries and lesser strategic positions."

John McCain should know something about selecting unqualified people for important positions - he chose Sarah Palin to be his VP candidate. And then again where was John McCain when the US Senate approved Suzan LeVine to be US Ambassador to Switzerland?

He's certainly expressed his displeasure with several nominees, but frankly as a member of the minority party in the Senate (until January) he has little power. The best he can do is ask questions that try to show the person's qualifications (or lack thereof). In one hearing he said:
Quote:
“I have no more questions for this incredibly highly qualified group of nominees,” McCain said sarcastically during the hearing for several of the nominees.
Quote taken from this article, has been mentioned before I think. LeVine was not part of this particular hearing, but her appointment is just as much of a back-scratch as the others listed in this article.

Apparently she did well in her interviews last year prior to formalization of her appointment:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...nate-hearings/

It's not uncommon in the US for Jews to use exclusively Jewish funeral homes because of the particular requirements for Jewish burial and mourning. Nothing odd about that. I just find the capitalization of LeVine to be weird.....it's a derivative of Levi, not a derivative of "Vine". But one can capitalize bits of their name as wished, i guess.

I'm not criticizing her preference for Jewish causes, either, though Liberman is a nutter. But whether or not she's more harm than help remains to be seen.

Re: Interview with new US Ambassador

Amb. Suzi is giving a speech at the American Women's Club of Zurich on March 9 with the inspiring title "Defining Success: What Does It Mean to Have It All".

A more appropriate title might be: "Defining Success: What Does It Mean to Have INHERITED It All".

Oh, if you get the chance, please ask her why she prefers to look like a perfect copy of a Nazi officier from a Hollywood campaign, especially her hair dress!

Making a large financial contribution to whichever party is in power is the main criteria for many US ambassador posts.

Walter Annenberg (also Jewish) was appointed as ambassador to the UK after he offered to pay for renovations to the embassy building
Walter Annenberg's father, Moses (Moe), was a mobster and an associate of Al Capone. The origins of the "philanthropic" Annenberg family, whose political contributions would buy the US Ambassadorship to the UK, are far less than honorable:

Moses Annenberg:
"Newspaperman and organized crime figure. Hired and directed criminal gangs on behalf of the Hearst Corporation during Chicago's "circulation wars" of 1910–1911, and later became owner of the National Racing Wire during the 1920s and 30s. Later used his wealth to purchase The Philadelphia Inquirer and found the Annenberg Foundation. Jailed for tax evasion in 1939."

Re: Interview with new US Ambassador

She is right now on RTS1 and she can't even speak French... the interview was briefly interrupted (problem with the interpreter); she's learning French though...
