Seven people have died after a Hawker Hunter jet crashed into several vehicles during Shoreham Airshow.
South East Coast Ambulance Service said the victims all died at the scene, with a further person being taken to hospital in critical condition.
The plane crashed on the nearby A27 in West Sussex. Fourteen people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Even so this is a wrong place for this news, but just today two planes collided at the airshow in Baselland, close to our village. One pilot died. How safe are these airshows -- looks like accidents happen often?

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Quote:
The U.S. dollar and the euro soared against the Russian currency at the opening of trading on the Moscow Exchange on August 24.
The rate reached 70.75 rubles per $1, which is 1.65 rubles higher than the previous closing.
U.S. crude was down 3 percent at $39.20 a barrel while Brent lost 2.4 percent to $44.40 a barrel.
Russia is facing some big money trouble. Ruble is crashing, gas prices under $50/barrel...

...Russia says they are willing to "talk" to the West, but insist they won't give up their "sovereignty" ...which is ironic, because Russia is trying to re-write the Ukrainian constitution, and the Ukraine/Russian border has been over-run by Russians for the last year...and then there's the whole Crimea thing... but yea, sovereignty is important (if it's your sovereignty and not someone else's)

Quote:
"We are ready to work constructively with partners from US and EU on an equality basis, but we will not give up independent domestic and foreign policy," Lavrov said. He also reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that Russia "does not trade its sovereignty."
...

Quote:
"Vladimir Putin is the most popular leader in the world. That’s not just some conclusions, this is based on the opinion polls carried out for years. This is understood when one communicates with the foreign audience," Lavrov noted.
Really?

About "Vladimir Putin is the most popular leader in the world." I always thought that title went to Kim Jong-un?

The IIHF fined the Russian hockey federation 80,000 Swiss francs ($85,000) after accepting it had apologized to Canadian officials.
Ouch, if it's not bad enough with the plunging Ruble and oil prices, now Russia has to pay 80k CHF (and apologize )to Canada for their disrespectful skating off the ice during the Canadian national anthem, when Russia lost the gold medal game to them earlier this year.

Quote:
"This was exceptional as no other team has ever left the ice before the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship medal ceremony was completed," the Zurich-based body said.

LOL, this is a polite way of saying Gazprom does not have the money to build these pipelines; same problem with the plan to build pipelines to China.

Putin has been using Gazprom as a political instrument instead of a business and so has managed to turn it from a potential trillion $ company into one worth circa $50M.
Due to EU sanctions the Western banks will not lend Gazprom any money.
The Chinese economy is not looking good so the Chinese are probably also not interested to lend Gazprom any money to deliver gas they may well not need

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Interesting. The US is not only training Ukrainian troops, but learning from them as well:

Quote:
However, the educating going on in Fearless Guardian is flowing both ways, and it’s starting to worry Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s military leadership. Captain Gingrich pointed out that “the Ukrainians have told us all about the Russian armor, tanks and artillery that they face, and how they’re used.”

American forces have been focused on counter-insurgencies for over a decade, and the interactions with Ukrainians coming from the front-lines are providing much-needed insight into another type of warfare, featuring regular troops backed by tanks and various artillery systems, protected by significant anti-air capabilities.

Another officer with the 173rd remarked that “we rarely or never saw massive forces backing our enemy [in Iraq and Afghanistan], we have not faced numerical superiority, so we can take lessons from Ukrainians, ask them how they apply skills in different situations.”

The Russian government will not fund four of the five projects for which Rosneft had requested financing from the country's sovereign wealth fund, the economy minister said today.
The decision reflects the growing pressure on Russian government resources and is a further blow to Rosneft’s ambitious growth plans; last year, the energy group asked for more than $40B in state support but later trimmed its request to just five projects requiring ~300B rubles ($4.3B).

Will Igor Sechin, Rosneft Chief, be the next Putin associate to be demoted for embarrassing Putin by asking for funding that is not possible?

Alof of RUSSIANS will find themselves out of work soon, as most factories that produce the banned soap are located in Russia...

Quote:
But the thousands of people employed just by Procter & Gamble at plants in the Tula and Nizhny Novgorod regions could lose their jobs if the products they make are on a long-term blacklist.
Banning food and soap is just bizzare, but banning foreign-made medical equipment will deprive average Russian citizens of proper medical treatment, which is just cruel

Quote:
Health experts say the ban, which targets more than 100 kinds of foreign-made medical goods and equipment, would deal a devastating blow to Russia's most vulnerable citizens.

Under the proposal, state-funded facilities would no longer be allowed to import items such as ventilators, MRI scanners, X-ray and ultrasound machines, defibrillators, and incubators for newborns.

The list of supplies that would be subject to restrictions also includes prosthetic devices, sterile bandages, orthopedic hospital mattresses, walking frames, and even condoms.

Russia paid in advance and France kept the interest so the extra cost was peanuts

France was a founding member of NATO in 1949 so hardly a "minion"!

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

Russia- China economy woes!
“Russian-Chinese ties have reached probably their highest level in history and continue to develop,” Putin said in an interview with Tass and Xinhua released Sept. 1 prior to his China visit this week.

Economic data tells a different story.
Trade between the two nations fell 29 percent in the first half of this year to $30.6 billion. Russian government officials now say that there’s virtually no chance they will hit their target of $100 billion in trade turnover this year, a goal Putin publicly embraced as recently as October 2014.
Putin in his interview didn't mention the drop in trade this year.

The decline in trade this year has pushed Russia out of the ranks of China’s top 15 trade partners for the first time in more than five years.

Gazprom signed a $400 billion gas contract in May 2014, a deal that Putin said would help to turn Russia’s eastern regions into the world’s largest construction site.
Since the announcement, the two countries have failed to agree on advance payments from China as a possible source of financing for building the $55 billion link and developing the fields (BTW Gazprom engineers estimated a cost of $100 Bn). Gazprom does not have the money and currently there is little chance of the Russian Govt. supplying the money.

Re: Russia and NATO in the News

this story hit the news yesterday. It details how a couple of russians tried to steal 100 million euros by using swiss banks. However the fraud was detected towards the end and the suspects have been sitting in pretrial detention for 4 years! The case was recently rejected by the judge and the suspect is still sitting in jail in Dielsdorf.

Can you imagine sitting in jail 4 years just because you are suspected of a financial crime.

On August 24, the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona decided not to admit the charges against TS and the poles, which is also held in Switzerland. The judges exercised unusually harsh criticism: The "extremely extensive" indictment (674 pages, 4390 footnotes) was "not to handle in its present form, it lacks particular structure" for the court. In other words, the judges could not understand what the investigators accuse the accused in detail. Now the judiciary must re-roll the prosecution -
1200 days of detention.
