The link I provided explained a few things about Sharon, who wasn't a psychopath and was voted into office.

If you want to discuss Sharon we can discuss it on Sharon's thread.

I thanked because this is my feeling/resentment too.. Ever since AKP won the election in 2002, I was resentful towards the voters; how can people vote for a party/politicians who have in the past openly stated their goals and have criticized the very foundations of the republic they aimed/achieved to rule. And despite various blunders, AKP kept increasing its supporter base. So even if some of the votes were rigged during last couple elections, AKP still got stronger. So in a sense, it shows, most Turkish voters do not care about human rights, corruption, secularism, minority rights, how nature is sacrificed for short term financial gains or the country is driven into a 'respectable' loneliness among its neighbors while the domestic structure is irrevocably fractured. Hence, the current ruler is residing there in his ridiculously expensive palace in the middle of a previously protected park thanks to the 40-50% Turkish voters.

But I can also understand why the above post got groans; 50-60% of the population does not deserve such a government. Some of them are ex AKP supporters, who foolishly hoped AKP would keep their initial promises of delivering more democratic rights to all sections of the population or were happy with the economic gains the government delivered without attributing it to the ample liquidity provided by US-EU after 9/11 and Lehman crisis.

I believe AKP's staunch supporter base is around 20-25%; those after religion based, Sunni-led fundamentalist government. The rest is those happy with the economy, or ones without a choice thanks to incredibly inapt, divided and almost equally corrupt opposition

He is an incredibly good preacher though; you/I might not be tempted by his style but for the average listener he speaks without hesitation and with proper accentuation and incredible excitement; he screams in such a manner you see he is believing in what he says.

Just compare his speeches to Kilicdaroglu's (main opposition party leader) dull, rather academic and boring style

That is just a statement of simple obvious logic. In the words of an old hippie I knew, "Wherever you go, there you are." It is what it is.

Re: Erdogan's 1,000 room palace

My point is that the country leader is representative of the country's psyche.

The leader got to be the leader because he/she knows their people and what makes them tick. In dictatorships the same rule applies but with a delay in which the nation suffers quietly until it's willing to risk the repercussions of active opposition.

Of course. If a population deserve better, they vote out or overthrow. If it hasn't been done, it hasn't been deserved.

Re: Erdogan's 1,000 room palace

They don't deserve dictatorship. If they raise their voices, they are put in jail or shot dead. The one who support him are uneducated or corrupted. Elections are corrupted, people who try to make a difference are shot down.

Let's not foul ourselves, he is where he is not because people like him but because their is a huge corrupted machine behind him with no moral.

The economy is a white lie. Everything is extremely expensive now, people can't afford what they use to and the construction boom is corrupted to the bones.

Ask Nicolae Ceaușescu, another dimwit that built a huge palace.

And a bit of ugly one, at that. It wasn't like we didn't have enough palaces, but they just couldn't represent him and the achievements of communism and the "golden era". In his last years when he lost any contact with reality (in the '80s) he also thought of himself as one of the greatest men in history of the country. (paintings from personal collections are pretty revealing). Ironically, he named this building People's House.

Every dictator builds palaces or something "important". They want to leave their mark you know. I wish they were more like some of the French kings though, they had style at least or listened to their counselors.

But back to Erdogan, you shouldn't have derailed the thread. The man is interesting enough to discuss about him.

Somebody once said something along the lines of "A King who wants to go down in history either builds a palace or starts a war".

So thank goodness that Erdogan sidestepped the second option.... for now

Erdogan is a master of deception
He successfully steered the discussion away from his lavish expenditures to this:
Erdogan: Muslims discovered America not Columbus
