Am I the only one that thinks this is just a grand marketing ploy? The film's getting a lot more exposure now than it ever would have done otherwise.
I dont think so. I get the feeling that the hackers have created serious problems for sony and have uncovered some extreemely damaging secrets that sony is aware of and dont want out in the public domain.

Sony realy needs to get their security sorted out. First the play station hack and now this. I think that sony has a high level mole who is passing security data to the hackers.

Sony is now 100% a target for hackers. if they dont secure their data properly this will happen again. Looks like the bean counters are in charge of data security at sony.

The down side is that all the spending on security is just driving up the cost of products.

Sony, I've heard of them, that's the hacking group notorious for trying to take over lots of other people's computers via rootkits on music CDs, isn't it? Do they still exist?

I think this too. They took terabytes of data and have only released a few ten of gigs so far. I think behind the scenes Sony is terrified of something they have but have not released yet.

I think the Orgy Scene with Kim Jong Un might have caused concern. The low quality version sucks so I cant judge...

Someone speculated that the hackers hinted at having some sort of "nuke" in their possession.
Probably evidence of criminal activity, like embezzlement, tax fraud - basically anything that could mean serious jail-time for the executives involved.
Maybe in combination with a really juicy sex-and-drugs scandal.

At this stage, there's not much left to really surprise the audience.

One thing is sure: for Mandiant/FireEye and the boatload of consultants probably roaming the halls of Sony Pictures Entertainment now, Christmas came early this year.
I pity the IT-employees who weren't smart/quick enough to jump ship.

My thoughts exactly... Time will tell. I'm hoping the the Jung 'Um is in on the stunt, and we get a whole gag-execution of Seth and James.
The Ill 'Un had a better sense of humour it seems.

I'm severely conflicted, on one hand I support free speech... on the other its one less Seth Rogen film in circulation
I'm struggling to take all this "freedom of speech" faux shock crap seriously.

I mean, are we really meant to take such heavy-weight views from Stiller and Carrell seriously when talking about "freedom of speech" when they produce so much mainstream dirge - enjoyable dirge in some instances, but hardly great political statements!

Re: North Korea lampoon film cancelled

I would wager I'm one of the few actual Seth Rogen movie fans here and I don't see it as some huge blow to free speech. If The Interview was going to make Dark Knight Rises money and Sony Pictures wasn't as crippled as it is by the hack, no terrorist threat would have been too big to stop its release. The fact of the matter is that it was going to be a middling hit at best and the perfect shit storm of factors makes it not worth it. Remember, terrorist threats against a multiplex playing The Interview (as unlikely as it is) would affect people from coming to see other movies, and The Interview is not going to make enough money for it to not matter. Also a nightmare from an insurance and legal standpoint. This is simply the best way for everyone involved (the studio, movie theatres, etc.) to cut their losses.

BTW, if you think it's a publicity stunt, you really to read up on the extent of the Sony Pictures leak. Or rather, don't, because internet journalists have been absolutely shameless about publishing private sensitive e-mails from the executives of this company. Ultimately, it's no less icky to read through these people's personal e-mails - filled with confidential company strategies, personal relationships disintegrating and things said behind each other's backs - than to click through to leaked celebrity nude pics. It's stolen private information and I wouldn't wish such a thing on my worst enemy. This will poison the careers of everyone involved and could seriously kill Sony Pictures outright.

Newt Gingrich called it "an Act of War". But it was Sony that capitulated.

I would have loved to read all the behind the scenes dirt though. I really abhor celebrity worship, and think people ought to know the real person behind the product. Perhaps Angelina Jolie is really a man, or something like that.

This news just in:

German hackers to target Great Britain as DVD stores refuse to take Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator" movie off store shelves.

Speaking to assembled journalists, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said "Those times were a dark period in our history and to have some Tommy making a mockery of the injustice and cruelty that happened is insensitive and quite frankly, inappropriate".

Asked why this issue was only now seeing the light of day, Merkel responded "Well, I've been on the phone to Vladimir for some months now and only just now caught up with Kim Jong-un's Facebook status ...".

Re: North Korea lampoon film cancelled

If anything, this is a much less understandable and chickenshit capitulation from a studio, Paramount in this case, that I would say is much more harmful to free speech in the face of terrorism: https://deadline.com/2014/12/paramou...ca-1201329597/

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are so ahead of the curve. They showed Muhammad in a South Park episode and a North Korean leader being killed in Team America years before any controversy.

Re: North Korea lampoon film cancelled

In 1987 Rudi Carrell, a comedian in Germany, lampooned the Ayatollah Khomeini in a 17 second spoof by showing Iranian women throwing their undergarments at him. Iran reacted by expelling two German diplomats and ordering the Goethe Institut closed.

Nothing new under the sun.

I have to say that a sense of humour and the right to laugh at sacred cows is a basic human right that should not be taken away from anybody. This ought to be in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

If there is anything the world is in more dire need of these days, it is levity and laughter.

Re: North Korea lampoon film cancelled

I can understand why NK is so upset about this, the film doesn't mention them winning the last world cup(s) or putting the first man on the moon or single handedly saving the planet multiple times from SK and the USA. (I'm guessing - I haven't seen it and I won't)

Saying that, I have no sympathy with Sony, they are getting what they deserved. Comments about "top stars" and Obama but "they do not represent me or what I think" etc etc, come on.

Sony said they did not cancel it, the theaters pulled out, and they will release.

So my mate wants to know where the torrent is. Anyone see it? Please post here, for my mate.
