Outrage as Cadbury's owner changes Creme Egg recipe

Yes I am outraged

Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate is no longer used for Creme Eggs' shell

The Telegraph
By Leah Hyslop
12 Jan 2015

For many Brits, Easter wouldn't be the same without guzzling a few Cadbury’s Creme Eggs - often to the point of feeling just a little bit queasy.
Fans of the sweet fondant-filled snack may be shocked to learn, however, that the company's US owner has quietly changed the recipe.

Kraft Foods has stopped using Cadbury’s Dairy Milk for the shell, and instead is using a “standard cocoa mix chocolate,” according to The Sun.

A spokesman for Mondelez, Kraft's confectionery division, told the paper: "It's no longer Dairy Milk. It's similar, but not exactly Dairy Milk. We tested the new one with consumers. It was found to be the best one for the Creme Egg, which is why we've used it this year.

"The Creme Egg has never been called the Cadbury's Dairy Milk Creme Egg. We have never played on the fact that Dairy Milk chocolate was used.”

Creme egg addicts have flocked to Twitter to complain. “First they stop making chocolate coins, now Cadbury's have changed their Creme Egg recipe. Terrible start to a Monday,” said one user.

It is not proving a good year for fans of the chocolate treat: many people have already voiced anger that the old multi-packs of six have been replaced with boxes of five, despite the fact that many retailers have kept the price the same.

In October Cadbury caused controversy when it announced it would no longer be making chocolate coins, a favourite Christmas treat in many households.

I don't give a damn about the coins but why would a company mess with perfection

Hershey's. That's what they've replaced it with. Hershey's. Ugh!

Re: Outrage as Cadbury's owner changes Creme Egg recipe

Gods, can't 'they' leave anything alone, who on earth would want to eat an american candy coated egg when we already had the real thing??

I found an overlooked Cadbury's egg in the downstairs fridge a few days ago.... wonder how long it'll be before I crack and eat it?

Hold onto it, it might be worth more as an antique original in years to come.

Sad day

They have also reduced the pack from six to five yet only reduced the price by 20p.

Perhaps an internet revolution may get them to change their mind

I admit I'm not a Cadbury's fan (too sweet for me) but Hershey's is horrendous. I think the mud pies I made as a child taste better. My sympathies to you Cadbury's egg fans.

PS Castro - shouldn't this be in FWP?

Too sweet for me as well. Fortunately, I still have some Camille Bloch Kirsch chocolate

Just what I was thinking.... am having to fight off both (swiss) daughters-in-law as it is, both addicted to the things! Although their uneducated palates might not notice the difference in the new coating.

Perhaps it would make a good job lot with the McSweens Haggis I also discovered in the freezer?!

When they are deep-fried the new version probably tastes the same as the old ones

Re: Outrage as Cadbury's owner changes Creme Egg recipe

I have loved Cabury's Creme Eggs since I was a child, despite once losing a tooth to one and am very disappointed in Cadbury.
What were they thinking?

They weren't. Kraft was.

It's my OH who can't stand Hershey's chocolate. I can take it or leave it, but I've never liked the creme eggs anyway. But I'd take Swiss chocolate over US or UK versions any day of the week.

Re: Outrage as Cadbury's owner changes Creme Egg recipe

Call me a cynic, but I won't be surprised if, after all this media and SM outrage, they back down in a week or so and announce that they are going back to using Dairy Milk for the coating.

That's a lot of free advertising they will have got. Watch this space

Re: Outrage as Cadbury's owner changes Creme Egg recipe

For any Creme Egg afficionados traveling to the UK, the Easter supplies will now be on display (likely since Boxing Day...) and likely have production dates from before "THE CHANGE". Stash up, and have a tasting party (if prone to sharing)

(I had a tiny nibble once, no wonder diabetes on a scary upward curve amongst all age groups in UK.)

When in UK, I buy one of the little dark choc w/sea salt bars from Pret a manger and stick it in my rucksack, I can make it last a week as a 2cm bit is just right. The milk orange/cardamom also quite ok, but tad sweet.
