Has sitting next to a non-smoker who reeks of smoke ever harmed anyone?
Are you asking that question because you don't know the answer?

As has been written before... many times....it's not a single cigarette. It's many, many throughout the day.
Judgement should be made on the actual, total average carcinogens inhaled as a daily average throughout the day. This will depend on ambient temperature, wind levels and direction, distance from cigarette source and time spent in the environment. No one cares about someone not liking the smell.

Of course they do. It's like sitting on a bus next to someone with bad body odour or at the theatre next to someone with smelly flatulence.

Sorry, I meant no one cares about someone else not liking the smell. It's fallacious to imply there are health concerns - it's nothing more than your personal preference which is as arbitrary as any other preference.

you're another idiot.

smoking doesn't only affect the person smoking. second hand smoke causes cancer.

i can care less if you decide to kill yourself, go stand in front of the train. if you want to smoke on children's playgrounds, outside hospital doors, near doorways, you're a ing douchebag. no two ways about it.
I don't smoke.

Is it my imagination, or are all the anti-smoking puritans in this thread really, really ****ing stupid, or what?

Yea, but look on the bright side - it's a good old-fashioned EF smoking thread!

I cut my teeth on those when I was a newbie on EF. It brings those warm Proust-like memories just like the smell of the slim Panatellas in my dad's old Morris Oxford in the 70s. (Sadly he died at the end of last year in his mid-80s. Doctors reckon his skin sarcoma may have being caused by sun over-exposure he suffered when doing national service in Egypt in his teens).

It's just super disingenuous to hijack a health concern and use it to try and lobby/legislate in line with a personal preference. Like wanting to make shopping streets into covered walkways because UV exposure is carcinogenic. You get to wear a hat and sunblock and if you still get some sun that's your problem.

The smoking carriage was the only free one on the train. The non-smoking carriages were occupied by smokers who had reserved the seats in them even though there were spare seats in the smoking carriages. (They didn't like sitting in the smelly smoking carriages but were happy to smoke in them and then go back to their seats).

Was it the bit about my wife being heavily pregnant at the time that made you laugh the most?
Quick question:

Did you have to take this train? I mean, there was no way for you to go a bit later with available seats in the non smoking area? Because frankly, when I was pregnant, I would have never put my feet in there. I would have take an other train later on.

I'm not currently pregnant but also would never entertain sitting in a smoking carriage. Its not my preference.

At least he's taking a step towards real integration. You can't claim to be truly Swiss unless youre looking to control the private activities of your neighbours. Now please pee sitting down after 10pm because all sounds cause me abject dismay.

While hating smokers, just do not forget that fireplaces and wood smoke is as dangerous as cigs:

No. It was one-a-day train from Poland to Berlin.

As I said, the smoking car was relatively empty.

But, the carriage air-conditioning broke and all the smokers had reserved seats in the smoking section but came through to our carriage to smoke.

If they hadn't done that, or had actually booked seats in the smoking section then there would have been spare seats in the non-smoking section.

But that's smokers for you.

Does that mean that when they give up, like you, they become worse humans?

You haven't really thought this through, have you?

Perhaps smokers are simply more tolerant?

The thing I (an ex-smoker who had the habit for 30 years) find actually disturbing is how many non-(maybe ex-)smokers try to enforce their views on others. Just like the couple in the OPs court case.

Tolerance means to say "go ahead" even though you don't particularly like what the other one is up to.

So if your upstairs neighbour irritates you by making a lot of noise every night then tolerance means "go ahead" even though you don't particularly like what the other one is up to.

Alright...Mr Swiss Guy. Is that how it works in this land of yours?

In fact it's how I function. And I don't care, nor do I take responsibility, for how other people (re)act.

Your response implies you may be unaware of even this basic concept. Time for you to broaden your horizon.

And btw:
It's a good thing you're not prejudiced at all, or else you might have tried some ad hominem play by alluding to peoples nationality

Well actually that's how I function too. Just because I have a rant on here doesn't mean I do so with my neighbours.

I've never sent anyone a passive-aggressive note and nor have I complained to any landlord about these things.

So I think my horizons are fairly well broadened, but thanks for thinking of me anyway.
