I'd say we need to shave her head.
Apparently ISIS recently offered to do exactly that. Or something.

Re: Michelle Obama unveiled in Saudi Arabia

Would Michelle Obama have worn this same outfit to a funeral in the United States or would she have chosen more subdued colors? (She wore a very conservative black dress to Dorothy Height's funeral.)

Also, if I want to visit a Cathedral I am REQUIRED to cover my shoulders, regardless of my beliefs.

Personally, I think when attending a funeral in a Muslim country, one should follow the local traditions. It is not the time or place for a political statement.

Even if it was a political statement nothing would change anyway for local women. But it's good for people's feeling of self-importance or something...

b) "their culture"? According to the bible do women have to cover their head when praying... and that's what you typically do at a funeral. Maybe not followed these days anymore, but that's something very new in the 2000 years of Christianity as my grandmother never went to church without a hat as the bible told her so... so it certainly was our culture till a few years ago.

OK, if she did make a statement and it wasn't about "not dressing properly for the occasion" (which is weird considering her position and the tons of advisers she has around, so it might be a statement after all, who knows), so what? It's easy to make "statements" when you're the wife of US president, isn't it? You're anyway a powerful Western woman and the Saudis have seen powerful Western women before.

It's brave and outstanding when you're Malala. True changes come from inside.
End of.

I'm not familiar with arabian color codes, but if they're roughly the same as here that dress is completely inappropriate.

Well, at least she wasn't dressed in red, or pink, gold, silver. I can honestly think of even more inappropriate...Let's not exaggerate.

Re: Michelle Obama unveiled in Saudi Arabia

Unless she entered a mosque, there's no requirement for a headscarf. Her outfit was modest (dark pants, high necked blouse, long sleeves and long jacket), and appropriate. Apparently they were traveling from India and this was what she put together. Black is not always necessary for a funeral.

If she'd just come from India, then she should have had a hat!

Standards really have started to slip.

She's from the US. No hat required. That's just for Europeans who want to be seen in a crowd. Was she outside the whole time? Her hat would have blown off!

Re: Michelle Obama unveiled in Saudi Arabia

Depends on the Cathedral- no requet made in Anglicans Cathedrals- but if you go to Italy or Spain, for instance, they have guards at the entrance who will tell you if you can, or can't go in- depending on modesty of clothing. Shorts, short skirts and low cut t-shirts with bare arms, and they will not allow you in. Some now will sell or lend you a cover up for your visit.

On visits to Egypt and Morrocco and also Med countries- I am always really annoyed and shocked at people going on guided tours of the hinterland, towns and villages, wearing skimpy shorts and low-cut tops and totally unsuitable clothing. Respect please- and if you have short sleeves, take a cover-up with you, doh!

Re: Michelle Obama unveiled in Saudi Arabia

Firenze, Pisa, Rome, St Peter's in Rome- etc. Same in Barcelona and Madrid, to name but a few.

'Do respect religion. The church is still an integral part of Spanish life and wearing shorts or being scantily dressed whilst visiting a church will not be appreciated. If visiting Barcelona Cathedral men should wear long trousers and women should have a shawl or a full top covering their shoulders.' from official Barcelona guide. There are guides at the entrance, stopping people who are unsuitably dressed, or lending them big cover-ups.

And from Trip-Advisor:

We stood in line at St. Peter's today (a late start...don't do that!) only to be turned away for not wearing more respectful clothing. We were in longish shorts and
that did not cut it with the guards/security at the entrance.
