Britains most dedicated poppy seller commits suicide due to harassment from charities

This is an incredibly sad story. Basically Britains oldest and most dedicated poppy seller has committed suicide due to constant harassment by charities for more donations. It appears the charities passed on her details to other charities resulting in constant cold calls and mailed letters which triggered severe depression, then tragically ended with her jumping off a bridge.

Full story and lots of detail here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...e-aged-92.html

Quote:
Britain's longest-serving poppy seller jumped to her death after being hounded by dozens of charities asking for her money in up to 250 begging letters a month.

Olive Cooke, 92, threw herself from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol last week after ‘losing her faith in people’.

The widow – who admitted she found it hard to say no – had been overwhelmed by receiving hundreds of letters and phone calls every month asking her for yet more donations.

Before her death she had complained about being ‘overwhelmed’ by more than 260 charity letters a month and until last year she had 27 direct debits because she just 'couldn't say no'.

Friends and family said the former postal worker gave away most of her state pension but had begun to struggle with her finances.
The charities should be named and shamed for knowingly, and somewhat ironically, preying on the vulnerable.

Shocking!!
But not surprising. Charity is a massive business in the UK now (probably elsewhere too, but in UK it's akin to selling double glazing and the disreputable side of cold call sales - the street sales have their own verb now; chugging (charity mugging))

Replace charities with businesses to be really correct.

90% of charities need removing from the charity registered as they are businesses run for the people in charge of them, barely a fraction of money raised goes to good causes once the obscene CEO salaries and "expenses" are paid. It's the next big scandal in the making.

Would there be a charity for family members of people harassed by charities?

...Or, a rather Napoleonic view, increase substantially taxes and get the state to fund properly what it is supposed to be funding, no more charities!

Who's willing to pay MUCH higher taxes?

even if all the money of the UK went to solve the problems of the world it wouldn't be enough so wouldn't change much except people not having any money to donate anymore...
Maybe it's a cultural problem, people unable to say no over the phone or something and they profit on that.
