Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

Well, I thought this would be a fun discussion on EF, as we seem to be enjoying a Scottish weather today!

And maybe the west and southwest can join Wales, leaving only the home counties as Greater Greater London.

I don't know if the people of Edinburgh have that many affinities with the people of Newcastle...or probably the same as with the people of Glasgow!

Re: Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

In the north there seem to be many simpletons. They listen to the SNP and believe there is a paradise waiting, of course after the SNP has got rid of those thieving Londoners.

One day they will all realise that the salmon and the sturgeon are lying to them. Scotland benefits from the UK, and this will be sorely missed if they leave the UK. It would also be thrown out of the EU, and I predict within 2 years all the foreign company employers will have left Scotland.

We could easily appease the northerners by making the new English border along Hadrian's wall, Newcastle to Carlisle.

SwissR has no particular reputation at present
Re: Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

In answer to the question, no, not really.. no desire to become Scottish per se, although without going too deeply into it, the Swissness in me has to admit that perhaps 'moving' to a country where you get more 'say' in what happens to you, is appealing.

But I'm not Scottish, so could I identify with being Scottish if I had to...? No, I doubt it, and I would have thought that there is something fundamental which would stop most Northerners having an affinity with Scotland or being Scottish... well, they just aren't are they!

Having said that. I am a dual British/Swiss national, my father being Swiss, my mother, English. I have never lived in Switzerland, yet I am allowed to vote there. I never have, because a part of me, despite being perfectly entitled to do so, feels that I shouldn't. Do I feel Swiss? Can I feel Swiss if I don't live there? It is something I struggle with actually!

I know this is going slightly off-topic but I do feel it is relevant as it addresses the fundamental questions of nationality, and how you perceive your own. 'Becoming' Scottish to someone living in Liverpool or Newcastle would involve a lot more than the shifting of a border!

Absolutely. It might also have some interesting repurcussions on football.

What I think is more realistic is having various English regions devolving along similar lines to Scotland.

Re: Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

Strange
While the European countries are moving towards a single unity (the EU) many parts of those countries want to move in the opposite direction and form small independent countries; I mean examples like Scotland, Wales, Catalan.

I am not sure the people have figured out the implications of such downsizing.
For example, I do not see China rushing to make a free trade agreement with Catalan

From my understanding, both the SNP and the Catalans want to remain part of the EU.

I don't think there's a contradiction here. It's about bringing home those decisons that are best taken locally, while vesting in the EU those decisons best made on a macro level.

It's about federalism really.

About "both the SNP and the Catalans want to remain part of the EU. " What is the saying ? "If wishes were horses then beggars would ride."

About "those decisons that are best taken locally" there are ever more decisions that the EU decide are best made by the EU

Re: Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

I was born in Lancashire and lived there until I moved here 8 years ago.

I am proud of my roots and no, would not like to become Scottish.

It was bad enough when they pinched part of Lancashire to become 'Greater Manchester'.

With dual citizenship or dual identity, you might simply have a wider perspective on the term "belonging" and you don't simply tick the standard boxes. I hate it when someone says to me "oh, you're half British", or you're "half French". I Feel pretty wholesome in either!

Re: Any Northeners out there wanting to become Scottish?

I like the sound of that!

In my younger years I often identified myself as being 'half Swiss', but I don't say that anymore. I have travelled to Switzerland ONCE in the last 25 years, whereas as a child/teen I was there at least once a year if not more. Yet bizarrely, I feel more Swiss now than I ever did then....

Nationality is more than just where you live or where you were born or who your parents are, it is much more nuanced and personal than that I think.
