Luton family of 12 feared to have gone to Syria to join ISIS

In a statement, Bedforshire police said: “There is a suggestion that the family may have gone to Syria. However, police have so far been unable to corroborate that information.”

I find this truly shocking, looking at the picture, they all seem very integrated in the British society, this could very well be a mystery!

No more or less intergrated than the 7/7 home grown terrorists. Now that was shocking!

This stuff shouldn't be news now. Why do the police even want to prevent them from going? They know what awaits so let them leave. Just make sure they drop off their passports on the way out.

I can understand your position, but I think our society still owes a duty of care to children, elderly people, and anyone who is not able to make a proper decision (read those who have "learning difficulties").

But otherwise, I don't have any pity for those who willingly make the trip to "Heaven".

What business is it of any British police force to know or care about where a British citizen chooses to go abroad?

What about to protect the children who have no say in the matter?

What about them? Is there a special law for some British citizens which forbids them from taking dependents to particular countries?

I'm not aware of any such law.

Do you think maybe you are "truly shocked" because both articles uses the vocabulary "feared to.."? Would it have made you feel more at ease if they had written "suspected to.." or "believe to...", or something like that?

I find the subliminal insinuation towards "fear" banal, I'm afraid.

They didn't go from UK, but on a stopover in Turkey, returning from Bangladesh ...... in May. All a bit second hand now.

So society owes a duty of care to anyone who is not able to make a proper decision. Does that include all women in conservative Muslim households? Looking at that picture I doubt that they had much say in the decision. Although 3 girls recently went off to Syria so I could be wrong.

By and large 99.99% of people in Britain have access to a television, newspaper, radio, smartphone, internet etc. So unless you've been living under a rock for the past 2 years you will know that ISIS enjoy throwing homosexuals from buildings, beheading people in orange pajamas and setting pilots on fire.

I can understand providing a duty of care to children. But anyone else? Well, fook em.

I can't. Last time I looked there weren't any restrictions on where British citizens could take their kids on holiday. That generally isn't how democratic countries work.

The DDR, on the other hand...

Does that include taking them to a war zone? The kids are British and vulnerable. The State owes them a duty of care. Although hounding a family across Europe in search of cancer treatment for their boy is perhaps a step too far.

It would have to be an official inability to make proper decision. Which means they would not be allowed to make their own decisions, and are mentally incapacitated. No car, no free movement, no free association. Otherwise, they are people who can make decisions, and simply make ones others don't like. None of that nanny state bs that people are not responsibile for their actions.

So what are we going to do? Send out a search party? Confiscate the passports of Muslim children "for their own good"?

There is no way to prevent families from going to Syria that doesn't involve a massive infringement of civil liberties. British citizens have a right to travel. They have a right to take their children with them. Where they go is none of the police's or government's business unless they have actually committed a crime and need to be apprehended.
