A bunch of people - including Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, etc - have signed an online petition that asks for automated weapon systems to be banned.

Incorrect. There are processes even here on earth that, while rare, make our efforts look feeble. E.g VEI 7 or 8, snowball earth. Once you consider astronomical events - e.g. large chunks of rocks, gamma ray bursts, nearby supernovae - what we're capable of is nothing.

Nature can sterilise the planet. We can't.

In the near future, all we can do is hope that the AIs like us.
I reckon we could do it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salted_bomb

Re: Food for thought: say NO to Autonomous Weapon Systems :-(

For those interested in some further reading, I was recently pointed in the direction of this article which I thought analyses the different viewpoints pretty nicely:

http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artifi...olution-1.html

To summarise, it's hard to say when it will happen but aggregating the views of the main experts in the field suggests there's a good chance by the end of this century. And when it happens there's a pretty good chance we won't be around as a species much longer unless we can figure out beforehand how to ensure that it is a friendly version of AI rather than an unfriendly one that eventually emerges...

Which brings us back to the petition - when some of the leading thinkers in the field find a way of getting more people involved in the debate, that can only be a good thing.
