Re: Another great Jeremy Corbyn idea!

I can't stand Mr Corbyn's politics, but this whole controversy smells a bit manufactured.

What he actually said and what everyone seems to think he said are two completely different things.

There's nothing wrong listening to ideas, no matter how odd or impractical, then taking them and seeing whether they are worth implementing or not.

Isn't that what politicians are paid to do?

What's behind the idea of having women-only carriages on public transport? It's not a loco motive, surely?

Re: Another great Jeremy Corbyn idea!

It would be a better, more long-term solution (if it is actually a problem in the first place) to tackle the underlying issues of why some people may feel unsafe on trains/other transport. This just smacks of hiding inconvenient problems away.

If people are feeling threatened it's unlikely to just be women who feel that way, and it's unlikely to just be men who are causing the threatening behaviour... have you seen a gang of girls having an argument?! It can be vicious.

It's a societal thing and a knee-jerk 'temporary measure' type reaction may do more harm than good.

Well, the idea has certainly given us something to choo on.

That's not to say it won't derail eventually, that is if it doesn't hit the buffers first.

Yes - just look at the world records for any elite sport and the difference is clear.

"Who started it" is a playground argument, which may well fit with the general quality of the debate in the labour leadership contest but doesn't really add any value.
Plenty of playground arguments in this thread already.

There are women-only Sauna/wellness and swimming pool days here in Switzerland, parking spaces (as someone on here pointed out) and coffee mornings! Why can't women play in the Premier league in mens football teams then? It's not really sexist to have women train carriages really for the purpose of their safety.
Aren't there also swimming pools that have days they open to Muslim women only.

They have naked swimming evenings too in our local one back in the U.K.

If there were enough fringe groups demanding special days then a lot of people wouldn't get to swim at all.

The late Lord Such of Monster Raving Looney fame once demanded they institute one day a week that they drain all the water out so non-swimmers can use the pool.

Maybe trains should spend one day a week parked in the sidings so people who don't travel by train can sit in them?

If you rotated it, so there's always a train parked, you could solve the housing shortage as well.

And convert the restaurant car to a soup kitchen.

Of course you'd have to pay the drivers triple time or something to do this extraordinary job.

So many good left wing ideas possible with this foundation

Another idea from Jeremy Corbyn.

Jeremy Corbyn, is planning to assassinate the Royal Family or at least make them pay the bedroom tax.

Re: Another great Jeremy Corbyn idea!

Of course breakfast tv rejects corbynís idea and says it misses the point: two birds, one stone: i.e. diss corbyn because he 'just doesnt get it' (unlike our class), and then uplight the need in this world for more Ďsecurityí. because as always more security will save us.

Itís not ing security thatís gonna stop the persistant, weird, harassment of women in public, especially when the 'security' they mean on uk private property (i.e. the uk!) is always going to be the cheapest kind i.e. remote surveillance security. Drunk men are entitled weirdoes with or without cctv. Whatís needed is a change in some menís attitudes, who have this weird entitlement about controlling public space.

Because what happens next? The instinctive and quickfire rejection of corbynís idea by the blokes on this thread (many of which OF COURSE take from the repertoire of both formal and informal fallacies as argument ((DO ME A FAVOUR))) reminds me of this idea I read by one of those skinny longhair 70s fems with massive glasses, that male privelage exists most obviously in the resistance to change by the most men. And of course: sex class is so deep as to be invisible endquote.

Every woman ive asked about this likes the idea and why is that? Because some men on trains and busses especially when theyíre pissed are unbelievable. Saying that, maybe Iím asking a bias sample somehow. So fair enough, if the majority of women donít care about segregated carriages then forget about it! But if the women want it Ö then who ing cares?

Which makes me want to ask @ newtoswitz, if you donít mind: you say that only asking women about this is only asking the people who would benefit ( and this is undemocratic). But is your implication here that men in fact would not only not benefit, but in fact see a reduction in benefit? Wouldnít they just have more or less the same conditions as before? And why would they not benefit from having a load of the population feel safe and happy? Wouldnít it in fact BE REALLY WEIRD if men knew that most women want this idea (letís assume here that they do) but then voted against it themselves because they want women in train carriages with them?

My friend Sarah says that itís unfortunately more than a bad joke to suggest in fact that the only way the bunch of obnoxious weirdoes who harass women in public would benefit from segregation is that they would doubtless see, in their drunken weirdness, that women who sit in carriages that arent women only are there to be talked at.

The key point is who and how will prevent "the drunken weirdos" from entering the segregated carriages?
Without such good security then there is a risk that the change will simply group women into easy to find targets for "the drunken weirdos"

Women would directly benefit from having their own carriages because only they can use them; everyone else (including women travelling with male friends/relations) have to use the remaining reduced space.

People may or may not feel as you suggest - but they should for sure not be deprived of a democratic right to indicate this by only asking a subset of the population.
