I also read that salami and other sausages also can cause cancer. So I assume it is time to become a vegetarian...

They had meat 50 years ago when cancer numbers where lower, so now it's meat causing cancer?
Cancer numbers are up now compared to 50 years ago in the same way as there's been a deluge of autism cases. The concept of cancer goes back to Hippocrates, who coined the word carcinoma. That means that a cancer diagnosis was not possible before 400 BC. Does that mean that cancer didn't kill people before then?

The fact is that detection and diagnosis of cancer has improved dramatically in the last 50 years. A century ago, people died of "old age"; now there is a slew of geriatric diseases, including cancer, picking off our otherwise sprightly OAPs, yet life expectancy in the western world continues to rise.

Life isn't any more lethal than it used to be, it's just that we know more now about why people die than we used to.

Probably won't help you much.

In fact, you could even die of gullet cancer (more prevalent than stomach cancer).

Looks like it's best to eat nothing at all. I have no definitive studies on the matter, but I have a strong feeling that strict fasting would protect you from death from cancer.

Ultimately everyone dies from something (ok, depending on your religious beliefs, you might allow a very few exceptions). I think one reason for increase in cancer is that deaths from diseases like diphtheria and typhoid, various infections that couldn't be treated well pre-antibiotics, etc. have decreased so drastically that people are dying now from the causes that we currently can't do much about. And as you say, we are better at putting labels on them.

So this report should lessen the demand for meat. I suspect it came with realization there may not be enough to go around. Okay, that's fine with me.

Re: Will my bacon kill you?

It's all preservatives and conservants (aka chemicals) that cause problems. It's not solely limited to meat. However, for some it will be a winning argument to advertise their "clean" products resulting in boost to the butchery's income or everyone will turn vegetarian overnight

You say fish? Wait, problem with mercury and etc ... Even consumption of too much ibuprofen can increase your predisposition to heart attack. One day we will all day either naturally or from something. No win-win situation there, I'm afraid.

Conservatives will defend their stereotypical views on what poisons in food kill ya.

Overall it's combination of preservatives and conservatives that kill us!

Re: Will my bacon kill you?

Oxygen kills you. When you breathe it in, it starts a chain reaction that produces free radicals and breaks down tissue, organ, bone and blood cells.

And you realise the Number 1 cause of cancer is cell replication? Yes, that is right. When cells divide and multiply, new cells may not come out perfectly. Most of the time, they don't replicate. But when they do, and your immune system does not eliminate them, then you have cancer.

Re: Will my bacon kill you?

Once past infancy it holds true that they older you get the more likely you are to die. The fact we are now living longer means that we are more likely to detect age correlated diseases - and then recover from them.

The question really should be whether quantity of life is worth sacrificing quality of life - and if we are all happier a greater quantity should we all be willing to work an extra 10 years to be financially secure through an extended retirement - and potentially more expensive final shuffle.

I am wondering whether in 30 years EF will be populated with threads like "People who eat bacon sandwiches on station platforms"
Or a world where teenagers nip round the back of the bikes sheds for a cheeky cervalet.

EDIT:
On a side not - the fact the OPs signature link forces you to register to view is a joke.

Turning off the viewing of signatures is one of the first things I did when I joined EF. I don't feel I've missed anything useful over the last 5 years.

Yeah, I came across the site a couple of months ago and left without being able to see their shop. It's not a great sales tactic - I wonder if they can see how many people click away.

There's a pie place, also around Vaud, with a similar restriction on their webshop. They lost my business too.

The identity of the official whose alleged responsibility for this hypothetical oversight that has been the subject of recent discussion is not shrouded in quite such impenetrable obscurity as certain previous disclosures may have led you to assume, but not to put too fine a point on it, the individual in question is, it may surprise you to learn, one whom your present interlocutor is in the habit of defining by means of the perpendicular pronoun.

No, that is wrong. Cancer is uncontrolled cell replication. So cell replication is not a cause of cancer; it is cancer, when uncontrolled.

Not entirely. Once you get very old, there reaches a point where the chance of living another year, while not high. doesn't decrease. Effectively you stop aging. Now if we only we could lower that age to, say, 50.

At the other end of the age spectrum, in some countries, the older you get, the more likely it is you won't die in that particular year as there is such a high likely hood that you will die in childhood.

That's because they don't eat enough bacon.
