Egyptian police kills head of ISIS/Sinai group operative in Cairo. He is suspected of being behind the claim of bringing down the russian plane.

The medieval Persian poet Sa'di, around 1250, is claimed to have said;
"So I finished the rogue, notwithstanding his wails,
With stones, for dead men, as you know, tell no tales."

Often quoted today as "dead men tell no tales."

Terror attack among possible causes of Sinai plane crash – Russian PM Medvedev, link here.

Change of policy, no longer a flat denial of this possibility!

Russia's wasting no time cashing in on the tragedy

Crimea wants to replace Egypt as tourism hotspot

As Russia bans flights to Egypt, the domestic tourism industry is at a crossroads. However, the closure of one of the most popular destination for Russian tourists has opened the door for Crimea to attract more holiday makers. Crimea could offer accommodation and entertainment as good as at Turkish and Egyptian resorts, says the head of the region Sergey Aksenov.

Typically Russian!
I do not know how attractive Crimea is now; since the Russian take-over prices have doubled to Russian levels and Ukraine have closed the land routes. Anyway Winter is starting; today in Crimea it is 10C compared to 26C in Sharm el sheik!

BTW, the RT article claims 3.8M tourists to September this year. Compare with 6M per year before the Russian takeover.
Most of those were Ukranians who probably do not visit Crimea any more?
It is also claimed that to encourage tourism certain classes of Russian public servants, pensioners and school children get subsidized packages, link here.

Re: Russian airliner missing over Egypt's Sinai peninsula

For those interested, there will be a podcast tomorrow on Aljazeera at 8.30 GMT. They fittingly entitled it "The Russian plane crash and the battle of narratives."

The bomb hypothesis (the idea that an insider smuggled it past security) has ignited a discussion of improving airport safety, especially in areas where ISIS can be suspected. What the changes might consist of is not clear yet.

Airport security needs to be reviewed. But as investigations continue into the cause of the Russian plane crash in Egypt, confusion surrounds what exactly the changes should be, and where they are most needed.

The Foreign Secretary said on 8 November that tighter security was needed in areas where Isis is “active”, in the increasing belief that the Metrojet aircraft was downed by a bomb placed on board at Sharm el-Sheikh airport, while the plane was being prepared for departure to St Petersburg.

Re: Russian airliner missing over Egypt's Sinai peninsula

If it was a bomb, its very possible that the device was placed into the luggage of one of the tourists back in their hotel. Regardless of how good or bad security is at Sharm airport, it is still risky and anybody caught doing it would be tortured and most likely killed by the security services. However a bell boy sneaking in a device whilst the luggage is being loaded onto the coaches is a much less risky option and far removed from the more obvious scene of the crime.

Please make sure to pass this idea ISIS/Hamas/Hizbullah or any other friends of Corbyn of your choice. Maybe they'll use it in your next trip to Sinai or Tunisia.

Sinai is cheap, warm and close to europe. Tourism will come back soon.

FTFY

I have heard very bellicose anti-Russian statements coming from Polish, Lithuanian, Lettish, Estonian and Romanian governments.

Russia Today is doing a great job it seems...I would't be surprised if you'd throw up a surrealist hypothesis.....

Back to reality.
Security is a joke on that airport.

Quote:
A CCTV monitoring station at Sharm el Sheikh airport was abandoned more than half the time, staff have revealed, raising yet more questions about the shockingly slack security regime believed to have let an ISIS bomb onto a plane.
Workers at the airport in the terror-stricken Sinai region of Egypt said that cameras overlooking baggage handlers were unmonitored around half the time - and that camera networks throughout the airport are broken.
Staff speaking to the Independent on Sunday said it was '50-50' whether somebody was in place at the camera station, where a security official was supposed to be staying alert for suspicious activity.
Quote:
One of the officials, involved in security for planes, also pointed to bribe-taking by poorly paid policemen monitoring X-ray machines. 'I can't tell you how many times I have caught a bag full of drugs or weapons that they have let through for €10 or whatever,' he said.

Re: Russian airliner missing over Egypt's Sinai peninsula

Announced today "Russian security services say traces of explosives found in debris of downed plane."

Well that is that then, so sad for the poor passengers

Putin said he had ordered Russia’s special services to focus on finding those responsible.

Went to Moscow last week and due to the crashed exchange rate of the Ruble is it cheaper than ever. It used to be the number one on those yearly Mercer lists of the most expensive places in the world... now it's on 54 or so. Great culture, food and everything I could wish for in a city trip... I could see myself visiting Crimea or other places for a vacation.

Yes, unfortunately, now every middle aged European man would feel himself very relaxed in Moscow.
Ballet in Bolshoi , borsh and everything they could wish for a city trip ( hopefully they use condoms).
Beware of thieves in the metro and poor cooperation from the police forces.
Better not to speak any other languages rather than Russian, ( And, preferably, without an accent ).
Good luck in Crimea )))

Hard to believe but I went there with the wife and I honestly believe that Moscow has more to offer than hookers. Yes, we did actually go to the Bolshoi, no ballet but opera. Amazing venue and the best production I have seen in my life.

I also enjoyed the food. Ukrainian, Armenian, Georgian, Azerbaijani and what not else. Totally awesome.

The wife enjoyed it so much that she asked me to look for other places to visit in Russia next year. And your problem is exactly?

St Petersburg. I was there with my son last weekend and it was everything good about Moscow, with added stunning architecture, the river and friendly people, and none of the lousy side of Moscow. Absolutely awesome food. Being 8, my son wasn't so much into the hookers, so I can't comment on them; also, I neglected to check them out last time I was in Moscow, so I really don't have a basis for comparison. Sorry.
