Guardian Readers, even worse than you thought?

ok, so this caught my eye.

The dark side of Guardian comments

'As part of a series on the rising global phenomenon of online harassment, the Guardian commissioned research into the 70m comments left on its site since 2006 and discovered that of the 10 most abused writers eight are women, and the two men are black. Hear from three of those writers, explore the data and help us host better conversations online'

I personally think it's not just guardian readers who behave like this,

what do you think?

Call me old fashioned, but for me a Guardian reader is someone who buys the newspaper, not an online troll who snipes Guardian journalists for sport.

Re: Guardian Readers, even worse than you thought?

Doesn't a comment have to be personal to count as harrasment?

I doubt most journalists even look at the comments under their own articles. They certainly ignore corrections that are pointed out to them and make the same false statements over and over. This is especially true in the science section.

I've certainly never seen the author of the original article engage in any form of conversation with the readers in the comments section.

Can it be harrassment if you don't know you're being harrassed?

Re: Guardian Readers, even worse than you thought?

actually on reading the article, thzey didn't manually sift through those 70 million comments or apply an objective measure of which were abusive or not.

they just did an SQL search and counted comments that had been deleted.

This doesn't give any indictaion on why they were deleted or even who took the decision to delete them.

Perhaps if they didn't write such utter shite then they wouldn't invite so many comments...

Let's not forget the Guardian loses millions every year, dodges taxes and takes pleasure in telling you you're a Nazi.

Sentiment analysis and searching in unstructured data, like free-text comments is much more sophisticated than doing a SQL search.

My best guess is that they've hired a company to perform this analysis (devs, data scientists & the lot), and they probably had some hypothesis in mind, such as: "articles written by X journalists have a higher rate of abuse vs X".

Companies do this stuff all of the time, but it's usually to look at reach (are they teaching the targeted users) & saturation of their products and engagement with their users.

Adding to this, the "comment is free" section - I know it's editorial - what a load of gumph. And it's always written by self-righteous chumps.

It seems like we're going the way of the US in terms of extreme political polarisation. Now its not enough to have a slightly differing political viewpoint, you have to hate the other side and everything it stands for.

More nursery school teachers??? what kind of sick commie scum are you?

I don't think so. The Guardian may have once printed stories like that, but it's online format has just evolved into the Daily Mail for leftists. It's full of click bait and headlines to grab your attention. The difference is, the Daily Mail shamelessly knows what it is and glories in it, whilst the Guardian runs victim pieces like this.

Re: Guardian Readers, even worse than you thought?

A good way to tell whether you understand a topic:
- If the subject matter is considered to be slightly left leaning (more teachers/nurses/etc) and the article appears in a right leaning media outlet (Telegraph/Mail/Sun/Express/etc) it will be a load of tosh
- If the subject matter is considered to be slight right leaning (tax optimization/company profits/budget cuts) and the article appear in a left leaning media outlet (Guardian/BBC/etc) it will be a load tosh

Anyone who raises ANY media outlet above any other media outlet purely based on the media outlet's leaning is an idiot.

(I find the Guardian's football page to be one of the best written of all the UK Dailys)

Re: Guardian Readers, even worse than you thought?

I am a regular commenter on the Guardian, but since around 2008 when the site went international, there seem to be a lot more trolls, Putinbots and Mericans on there.

Comments I have made were deleted for no apparent reason, I think I may have flamed other commentators who reported my comments. I never swear or direct derogatory comments at other users on forums, well mostly never . Generally I enjoy the Guardian articles, I do see a lot of vitriol on there these days, but its usually because the Guardian is not socialist enough, or there are too many ingredients in a Yotam Ottelenghi recipe, not because the author is a woman or has a different ethnicity.

The Daily Mule may write a load of tosh but it has entertainment value. Yes, there are low-IQ people who believe every word they read but then there are probably people who beleive The Onion too. That's life.

The Guardian writes tosh too, which in itself is OK, but somehow fewer people see through the joke and the joke isn't as funny.

How often, when reading an article, do you check who the author is, let alone check their gender or ethnicity?

I believe most people don't care.

In the comments section of the above article somebody points out that some subject areas get more abuse than others, For example fashion articles tend to get a lot of "who cares" type of comments which get deleted pretty quickly. So maybe the correlation here is not between gender or ethnicity and deletions but between subject matter and deletions?

These are commentary pieces, its internet fluff, I agree they are cringe worthy. The real reporting on the Guardian is very good, often much better then most other news outlets.

It also seems that a lot of people cant tell the difference between these commentary pieces and the news and complain about the Guardian, I find it amusing because the idiots often complain about something they are getting for free.

I thought the Guardian was a satirical journal - like Private Eye.

Do you all mean that the journalists are serious when they write some of that stuff?

As serious as they can be when sipping champaigne over their quinoa yoghurt.

It does get stuck in the keyboard sometimes, mind you.

Sounds more like the Times to me. A true Guardian journalist would boycott quinoa because of the social and environmental impacts that this latest fad crop is causing in Peru.
