Re: Bathrooms for Transgendered folk

If you work with swimmers with disabilites, you'll often find that any toilet facilities are for both sexes as are, sometimes, the changing rooms too. And as the coach sometimes has to be available to help those who need assistance, she/he finds themslef in the same situation. Sometimes there are curtains, sometimes the whole changing room set-up was planned by some genius who put the in/out doors so that no matter where one stood to change, one was directly visible if anyone else came in or went out!
One gets used to it. We tried to keep prices for training camps down so booked as few hotel rooms as possible. This meant occasionally that a female coach (me) shared a bedroom with a couple of guys.

If you want to learn how to change into or out of a bathing costume without showing too much -er flesh, you should go to an open-air swimming meet in summer. After the warm-up, the girls can wiggle out of a tight-fitting wet bathing costume and wiggle their way, with their skin still damp, into another tight-fitting dry bathing costume, with the aid of a not-very-large-towel and a T-shirt, without any problems at all. I never worked out how they did it though.

If it makes you uncomfortable that there is someone of the opposite gender, or somewhere in between, in the same room getting changed, then take yourself to a private cubicle. Its your problem, not society's.
I would argue it from the other side.
If the gender you were born with makes you so uncomfortable that you have to modify your body in an attempt to change your sex then you should take yourself to a private bathroom. It's your problem, not society's.

That's always deluded me as well - like tying the bath towel around your head in an easily manageable and afterwards appealing way - while still making it look easy.

However if one of my neices was in a bathroom/changing room then I wouldn't want any men in the same changing room. Even if they have 'changed' to a woman.
You don't really get it, do you?

The main reason for the separation in my mind between sharing between male / female is that the loo seat is often left open, with sometimes some undesirable side effects - and here I really draw the line!
Better not go to Italy then, they usually don't have seats!

Re: Bathrooms for Transgendered folk

McClean in the SBB stations seem to work well enough - urinals through one gate, cubicles through another. As far as I know, there's been no deaths by outrage yet.

I can see the possibility with open changing rooms/showers for embarrassment on both sides, but nowt some cubicles there wouldn't sort out either.

Thanks for pointing that out. I read it as transexual instead of transgender. Oops

In that case I think let them choose what they identify as and so be it.

I am very confused.
Is a transgender/transexual just someone who feels like they should've been the opposite sex?
And what do you call someone who is seemingly a man and a woman? (Like that South African runner a few years back)

For me, it's someone who has had hormonal treatments AND surgical gender reassignment, anything less are just wanna-bes (such as Bruce Jenner).

Re: Bathrooms for Transgendered folk

I suspect this is a much bigger problem in the United States because their lavatories offer very little privacy.

Over here, where we have proper cubicles and locks that work, I don't see what difference it makes who goes through which door.

Perhaps they ought to start making their bathrooms look less like stables and more like actual bathrooms? Just a thought...
