Re: Will Trump be the next US President?

All these speeches are written by someone else. You didn't think Obama actually speaks without a teleprompter, do you?

Looks like Melania's speech was sabotaged.

I think they should all just go off script at this point. It would be more convincing.

The VP is of crucial importance in these elections.
I could see impeachment before assassination - not that I am advocating for either in a normal state of things, mind you.
Impeachment on what grounds?

Do you actually know enough about the US political system to understand the requirements of impeachment?

Tom

Didn't Palin convince you that going off script is a bad thing?

Well, actually, it was a good thing, in the sense that it was clearly a bad thing.

As a matter of fact, I do

My point was simply - they are both unlikely IMO. But if I need to pick one based on likelihood of occurrence, I guess it would be impeachment before assassination.

It would seem that history might disagree. Only Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached by the house. Both were cleared by the senate.

Lincoln, McKinley, Garfield, Kennedy were assasinated. Reagan was shot during office but survived. Apparently there have been lots of assasination attempts.

Although wikipedia is not the best source, this is what i found:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...mpts_and_plots

Lots of nuts with guns in the US. It only takes one, whereas impeachment requires a vote by the House and trial by senate. What do they say about herding cats?

So its official Don "Megalomaniac" Trump is the official Republican candidate, as if things in the world couldn't get worse!

Its getting closer to the time to merge this thread with the Third World War thread.

We are almost all doomed.............

Of all the things Trump has said and done, this for me takes the cake. I don't like how Trump doesn't recognise the damage of the Melania speech. That's his wife up there left hanging and looking bad. It tells me he would be as numb to more important and pressing issues.

If he doesn't come down from his pedestal and address this today, he's fired! I find the low quality output intolerable for someone seeking that office. If he doesn't cover his own wife's back, whose back would he cover?

This tells me he really isn't serious about winning this election. If he doesn't get it, he ain't got it.

If only it were so, he only talks about himself not really any policies (and those are only about hate and prejudice) and he is serious about winning, he loves power and there ain't nobody more powerful then the Prez of the good ole US of A. I wouldn't have believed how the numpties in the UK would vote so I can only imagine how this might pan out in the States. Maybe the whole of NY State will be turned into a golf course and the residents evicted.

I would have thought that anyone who uses their brain for anything other than just breathing and blinking would understand that shouting "you're fired" isn't a sufficient skill set for the diplomatic problem solver that any president needs to be.

It wouldn't be the first time my faith in humans turned out to be misguided.

Re: Will Trump be the next US President?

I wonder if the reason why no-one has been fired over Melania Trump's speech is because the plagiarised passages were her input. In one of the plagiarised parts she says "you do what you say and keep your promise". Surely it would be more idiomatic to say "keep your promises".

She did say that she wrote it "with as little help as possible".

Anyody on this forum who knows some Slovenian? Would somebody of Slovenian mother tongue say this? Or was it just a heat of the moment type of mis-speaking?

Actually, if the speech had been something truly original, ground-breaking, I would understand the plagiarism concerns.

But the MIchelle Obama original was rather unmemortable run-of-the-mill bullcr@p that an uninspired junior speechwriter might crank out.

If Melania did plagiarise it, maybe because she recognised it as such and though nobody would notice. I don't think would have copied it because it hit any greater resonance.

If this was the case, I would find her adorable for her attempt. Its not her native language afterall. Nevertheless, you'd think Trump would care enough about it to make sure it is vetted. Perhaps he spent the money on a new Brioni suit rather than a more professional staff Melania.

"I read it once over, and that's all because I wrote it with as little help as possible''

The woman is talking about a major speech at a political convention in front of a world wide media audience, and all that she can say in her defense is that she didn't read what she wrote sufficiently often, or have anyone cast a look at it? I know a few Slovenians... none are that vacuous.

We have to make a choice between a megalomaniac and a crooked liar.

I would vote for the one that can be contained and caused to implode on itself with minimal harm. Minimise damage!

Which is it?

The Trump camp seems to be trying to make her out to be America's Tony Blair. The message on both sides of the Atlantic being "these politicians you trusted are criminals, anyone must be better than them, so vote for us".

Donald Trump's words must have worked well, if you're now using them yourself! Keep listening to him, and sooner or later you'll stop thinking he's a megalomaniac.
