So I did go on these long discussions with people who wanted to vote for Hillary, and iterated through the problems with that - She sucks and is a lying snake. How they voted and what they did afterwards was none of my business.
"She sucks and is a lying snake." If you want to advise people then logic usually works better than the sort of emotions currently being displayed by extremist Trump supporters.

Don't be silly Jag. I could give you all kinds of suggestions and ideas of what you can do. (I'll be decent and I won't) It doesn't mean I instructed you on what to do. Anyway, enjoy your evening.

Never give in Phos. Most especially when you've lost the point. I believe this is what the politicians refer to as "Staying on point."

I remember my father arguing with my grandfather about their shul (synagogue) for hours. Definitely that kind of thing.

By the way, I saw a cover of a Czech magazine online with a naked Trump squatting down like an ape. I guess the idea was that the US has elected an ape like creature. It was .... interesting, to say the least.
You mean Reflex. It is a really bright, dry, funny and real weekly that all my friends and family read. I just met somebody here on a train who subscribes and will pass on her copies, bliss.

That cover says "Will the world be run by apes?"

People choose who to argue with, my culture treats opponents with respect since we ourselves pick them, out of anybody else, to receive our thoughts and effort. To debate with somebody is to devote time and thoughts. I would not argue or debate with anyone not worth my time or thoughts. I think that is actually a Jewish thing. "Why are you arguing with me?" "Because you are worth it." - kind of mentality.
Totally agree with this in principle, but we wouldn't be here if we followed what we really and deep down, think.

Perhaps absurd opponents "deserve" our effort just to not let them win too much ground. Oder?

I know what you mean. But exchanging ideas is no battleground - at least we do not see it like this. It is an exercise that we are only interested in because we want the ideas be better. There is not much ownership or copyright, not much ego. Debate with somebody is a fine way to take care of those ideas. I also grew up in an environment not only passionately opinionated but also super humorous where people would twist things to serve the other one just to laugh together. And pat the other or oneself on a shoulder, in a loving way and chuckle.

Absurd opponents are those who self-agrandise and promote. It is pointless but they are only embarrassing themselves, not much more. Benign.

Ah thank you. It looked interesting. Apes might be an improvement. If gorillas ran the world, that might be a good thing - they are peaceful vegetarians (or mostly). Chimps, on the other hand can be just as bad as humans with an occasional propensity to violence. If their palates weren't so high, they might be capable of speech. Just a few regulatory genes away from leadership potential. Not so different from the present situation.

By the way, Phos was interested in "outing" the Clinton supporters. Wasn't obvious? I voted for her, I'm sorry she lost and I still think she'd do a much better job than the great orange pretender and his recycled swamp fossils.

And I learned something new. Apparently he's a bit of a germaphobe and doesn't like shaking hands. Grabbing other stuff must be ok, though.

He does look out of his depth...but he'll be trotting out Newt and Rudi, and other great minds such as Ben Carson. Sigh. It's going to be......different.

Yes, you probably described a different environment for debating ideas. This is the total antithesis of what is going on in the (general) media, social media (EF included) etc.
I don't think that sharing/exchanging can change anything, I've seen too much. Pay attention, nobody predicted Trump's victory based on the polls.
