Off Topic / International Affairs at a guess.

You've put it as daily life in Switzerland; are you saying this happens daily in this country?

Re: Paedophile in International Schools!

That article makes pretty grim reading.

It seems to me that time and time again people who could have done something failed to do so, and are now pleading ignorance when in fact they chose to look the other way.

It is always difficult to challenge or cast doubt over the integrity of a popular and succesful teacher. But looking away is not the solution.

I wonder to what extent the general attitude of International Schools played a contributory role here, as in their insistence on wanting to be a strong and closely knit happy community which makes being a whistleblower all the more difficult.

I hope there will be some serious soul searching among head teachers and governors as to whether this needs to change.

I never went to an international school, but some crap state high school... the teachers were still a community that had each others back and turned a blind eye on a lot of things from obvious drug problems to extremely choleric tendencies abusing students. If some otherwise likable guy hides it well am I sure he'd get away with a lot of stuff...

and I think that's about it: This isn't some international school problem. This isn't some school problem in general. It can happen anywhere where adults work with children, from school to sport club to church. It's a fact that most abuse will happen within the family or close neighbours and friends. The risk is tiny, the impact massive. Therefore should there be no wrong attitude of ignoring anything... but panicking won't help anyone either.

Re: Paedophile in International Schools!

Teachers do look out for each other, but not at the expense of their students. Please don't assume some conspiracy of silence here. First and foremost is a duty of care.

This guy didn't have that: he was a bastard, plain and simple.

And this is why everyone who works with the under 18s/ vulnerable adults should be on a register with a valid criminal records check as they are in the UK. Just as qualifications can be internationally recognised, so too should the police checks. You should not be able to get into a classroom/be the responsible adult unless you have one.

I'm not saying that there aren't cracks that these people slither through, but as the article stated, had one of his international employers contacted the relevant US authorities, his background would have come up.

I had to literally force a copy of my valid CRB (now the Disclosure and Barring Service) check on my employers here. It wasn't asked for. I have no idea of the backgrounds of the women I leave my daughter with on a regular basis. There are no certificates on the walls, no assurances.

I know that there are no guarantees in this world, not truly, but there are safeguards; and these should be used, particularly around our most vulnerable.
