Time for a Swiss passport?

A poll for Brits following Brexit

Cock - where did the poll go?

1) I'm not British but want to vote
2) I'm British and already have a Swiss passport
3) I'm British and will apply once I can
4) I'm British and will leave CH

If the UK joins the EFTA the status of British citizens in Switzerland will remain the same. In the meantime, they might be in limbo.

AFAIK EFTA is purely a trade association and conveys no movement rights

For purposes of Swiss residence permits, EU-27 and EFTA are treated the same. All other countries are considered "third-state":

So where's the poll? Do we need to get Catharmony in to create one?

...but is that because of EFTA or the EEA?

If the UK doesn't join the EEA (or do its own bilaterals) I still think it could wind up as third-state. Will anyway have to see what transpires over the next couple of years.

Poll as usual lacks options. We both have Swiss passports- but I have written today to remind daughter to get her OH and the children registered as Swiss citizens asap (daughters already have Swiss nationality).

Swiss passports should be denied to any UK citizen who voted OUT - and are now watching the demise from the safety of their plush job, fat Swiss salaries and the comfort of their alpine and lake views- adn whose only personal consequences will be cheaper holidays in the UK and abroad...

Why are people with British passports risking being deported? Is Switzerland secretly run by the governments of America and China?

Hedging? You have UK property, no?

And how would this be policed? Some of these "fat cats" have been recruited from outside CH/EEA/EU (depending) because there is no local equivalent talent. AFAIK it's often surgeons, for example, are "imported" because they're considered to be too expensive to train here and they get very nice salaries as a consequence - win/win for them.

Pulling up the drawbridge is fair enough as an emotional reaction but it's a little near sighted, IMO.

If the UK doesn't join the EEA
It would be politically impossible for Britain to join EEA, it would mean accepting free movement of people from the EU as well and the main issue of the referendum was EU immigration.

If you're an established resident of Switzerland I can't see us being kicked out, but I wonder how long it will take the UDC to ask questions about this. The UK does not actually leave the EU until 2 years after we give notice, which we have not done yet. Switzerland will have to deal with its own bilateral issues before then, which is another issue.

After we have left EU I guess we become like Americans or South Africans i.e. if you want to move to Switzerland there are more hoops to jump through.

Re: Time for a Swiss passport?

We've been planning to go Swiss for a while now, just getting our German up to par is all we need to do.

Nothing to do with the passport, nor has it been influenced by yesterday's events, just that we plan to stay here and it seems obvious that it makes sense in the long term.

It would be politically impossible for Britain to join EEA, it would mean accepting free movement of people from the EU as well and the main issue of the referendum was EU immigration.
THAT is the whole point:
1. The UK will want access to the common market. That access will only come with the option of immigration - both ways btw. The EU won't let the UK cherry pick what they want.

2. All those crazy EU regulations UKIP was making fun of? If you want to sell your stuff in the EU will you still need to follow them... very much so like Switzerland does today: The Swiss parliament is struggling to keep up with the EU speed of changing Swiss law to make it match EU regulations. All Swiss export oriented companies follow them and have no other choice. Unlike their EU counterparts do they have no say or even lobby power in Brussels. The difference between a member and a non-member? Only members have a say in the process of making those laws, the non-members like Switzerland or Norway have little choice and just follow... the UK will do the same.

In the end does it not really matter if the UK is in the EU or not. Not much will change in every day life.

What will change:
- The UK had a massive discount in their EU membership fees. For some reason was it not something discussed a lot: The UK managed to get a pretty good deal in the past. I sincerely hope that the EU has its act together for once and will not make the same mistake twice: No discounts on access of the common market anymore.
- The UK was a very relevant voice for free markets in the EU. By leaving the EU did the "regulators" like France win a lot of momentum...
- The UK will be less important than before as they are simply not part of the political processes in Europe as before. I am sure it will take a decade or so to bring the message across, but being the "free" noisy neighbour won't get the UK anywhere.
