I think it played a very importanmt role in the post war period in establishing trade and peace. But with its goals fulfilled, its leaders began to see it as a purpose unto itself and to keep inventing new jobs for it so they could keep it alive.
Not only that, but the structure and philosophy of the EU is outdated and antiquated for the modern world. EU is top-down hierarchy that incapacitates productivity where productivity truly takes place. It takes away intelligence where intelligence is needed. I think this eventually grinds itself to a halt, as shown in other systems of centralized control. This has been demonstrated in history over and over again.

For a fluid living system, you really need full autonomy at the level of production. It leaves me to doubt the EU is even concerned about a living system. I believe they are merely concerned with control of the system, even if it leads to the dying out of individual units. Basically, I don't think it can ultimately work.

Le Pen is no more seen as an out of touch dangerous far right politician, she has more and more support among the French people.
And you don't find that scary? She's a fascist. End of.

Seems to me that the same mechanisms are at work here like those when a Empire stagnates and then rips it´s self to bits. History is full of examples.

Re: Marine Le Pen for president and Frexit

Centrist Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron has tossed his hat in to the ring (or will do soon). This popular young and ambitious politician could shake things up next year.

It'll be interesting to see how he manages with the heavyweights. His working hours reforms met fierce opposition and he did oversee the break up and sale of french blue chip company Alstom to the Americans.

If he makes it to the final run off against Le Pen though he'll have a good chance. Although the same is true for anyone who is on that final ballot paper. The number of terrorist attacks between now and then will probably have a greater influence though.

I understand the FN believe they will have better chances against a leftist in the second round, as the centre-right vote would split down the middle, whereas a centre-right candidate would attract virtually all the leftist vote.

I'm thus expecting the FN's campaign rhetoric to be chiefly directed at the centre-right with leftist candidates being let off comparatively lightly.

But with leftist politicians backing burkini bans etc, the left is clearly fishing in the right's water, knowing full well the FN is not going to hit back very hard. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

So Macron has tossed his hat into the ring. Don't fancy his chances though. After Brexit and Trump, who'd bet against Le Pen?

Re: Marine Le Pen for president and Frexit

Sarkozy out of the running after coming third Republican primary. Fillon and Juppe to run for the right to face Le Pen in the run off.

Right wing or futher right wing will be the choice for France. Le Pen will run away with it after the first ballot. The second one will likely go the way of 2002.

That's not a given any more.

In the aftermath of a Brexit and Trump victory, FN are definitely thinking big.

It'll be a lot closer I reckon. I can see the media and rival parties rounding on Le Pen. Which will of course only work in her favour. Still too early to call at the moment. Leaning towards either Juppe or Fillon, however this will all depend if anyone has learned anything from the Trump/Brexit campaigns.

Re: Marine Le Pen for president and Frexit

Maybe off topic, but ...

Private Eye reports that Farage told a journalist (referring to sultry French nationalist Marine Le Pen),

‘I like Marine Le Pen. I’ve had dinner with her. I think Marine wants to sleep with me, you know.’

Yeah, thanks for posting this. Not referring to you in particular but I sense some joyful remarks on EF and more to come. (I'll bring my popcorn, sit back and relax)

Before that...: this would be very reassuring for the Brexiteers and UK, but Marine Le Pen? Really? Everything for a bit of satisfaction? This lady makes Sarkozy look good, and would be a nice match for Farage. Think of Farage being UK's PM.

Anyhow, I guess this will be the next overly-debated subject in the months to come...hope we'll have fun.
