Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Around half the senior officers were fired, the military schools are closed and the armed forces will controlled by a civilian.

Seems like one of the best armies in the Middle East will turn into one of the worst.

Apparently, the Incirlik NATO Air Base is surrounded by Turkish forces:

None of the traditional western media are reporting this. So it's a question of how much you trust "RT" and the various youtube-channels ;-)
OTOH, given that we had enough distraction from the pro-Erdogan demonstration in Cologne, the timing of both events seems to be a little bit too convenient....
I've long since stopped believing in coincidences.

I hope they've had the nukes removed by now...

Apparently, the blockade is over again.
Right in time for the visit of the US Joint Chief of Staff Chairman...

They feared another coup? WTF? They've basically pushed 60k people into complete poverty and put thousands into prison - and they still think "They're out there"?
Do they also think Jason Bourne is real? Does Erdogan believe the US is sending Evelyn Salt to kill him?

"They've basically pushed 60k people into complete poverty" I am sure the senior military guys would be very much welcomed by the Greek military to give insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the Turkish military and their secret contingency plans!

According to your link the blockade was also reported by Ihlas News Agency which is claimed to be the largest Turkish agency!

the end of the Hashemites in Iraq in 1858 meant some 40'000 fatalities. But also the take-over by General Gürsel was bloody as Mr Menderes had lots of supporters. The coup of the Free Officers in Egypt in 52 also resulted in fatalities

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Quote "The night after coup plotters put tanks on the streets of Istanbul and Ankara, Turkish doctors almost 5,000km away in Somalia were preparing for a late shift at Deva Hospital as normal.
The hospital, founded in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu five years ago by a Turkish charity, typically treated more than 100 patients a day. But that evening, under pressure from Turkey, a major donor to Somalia, the government announced it must close.

The Turkish diplomatic offensive is forcing independent nations around the world to choose between their relations with Ankara and often popular local schools and hospitals."

Wonder how Turkey managed to mount this international offensive so soon after the coup; it must have been planned long ago!

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Quote; "According to the Turkish presidency, the decree published last Saturday will close 1,043 schools, 1,229 charities and foundations, 19 unions, 15 universities and 35 medical institutions.
It also extends permitted detention to 30 days from a normal maximum of four days.
Parliament will get to vote on the measures, the president’s office said.

Deputy Prime Minister Neruttin Canikli said on CNN-Turk TV today that assets worth $1 billion have already been seized from Gulen-linked institutions. "

I wonder who will share this billion?

Quote; "Erdogan criticized S&P Global Ratings, which downgraded Turkey’s debt this week, saying it is motivated by hostility to Turkey and no one should pay attention to it."

Like most dictators, Erdogan is starting to believe his own rhetoric.
S&P cut Turkey’s credit rating one level to BB, two steps below investment grade, and assigned a negative outlook.
The move came after Moody’s Investor’s Service said July 18 that it was reviewing Turkey’s Baa3 rating, the lowest level of investment grade, for a downgrade.

Turkey calls in senior German diplomat after Cologne rally

Germany prevented Erdogan speaking to rally in Cologne via big screens. The bare faced hypocrisy of the Turks is almost admirable.

The decision sparked anger in Turkey, with presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin calling the ban unacceptable and a "violation of the freedom of expression and the right to free assembly".

In other news, Germany has warned Turkey against 'blackmailing EU' over the migrant deal. Turkey are threatening to pull out as the EU is stalling on the visa-free travel deal for Turkish citizens. What's most unbelievable about this, is that the EU still believe Turkey had something to do with the reduction in the number of migrants making it into Europe.

"Turkey calls in senior German diplomat " This has its amusing side!
The Turkish govt. has painted itself in a corner; since the Armenian vote the Turks have been refusing to talk the German ambassador.

So now when they want to complain they have to call in someone junior! I imagine he sits there saying something like "I have every sympathy but you really need to talk to the ambassador".

"the EU still believe Turkey had something to do with the reduction in the number of migrants " Of course Turkey did, they simply clamped down on the smugglers. Before they did that the smuggling and selling of life jackets etc. was carried out very openly.

Yup, German - Turkish relations couldn't get much worse. Amazing that 40,000 turned up, but out of 2.5 million odd Turks in Germany, it's not that many.

The flow of migrants ground to a halt way before that deal was done. When Macedonia closed the border and migrants realised they'd be stuck in Greece indefinitely they stopped bothering making the trip from Turkey. Turkey have somehow managed to take credit for this though.

I read a report that Turkey was sending across disabled folks from Syria in a bid to further annoy the EU in the 1-for-1 exchange program.

Compared to the number of Muslims who showed up at Catholic masses in France after the slaying of the priest it's an astonishing number.

There were reports Turkish police were beating people getting into boats on their coast. They definitely did something in the immediate aftermath and that's the point - you only need to do enough to persuade people that the reward is not worth the risk.

I think this blockade was about Gülen and Turkey's demand request that he be sent to Turkey for prosecution.
