Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Turkish special forces units and jets supported by warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition launched an operation in northern Syria on Wednesday to wipe out Islamic State militants along the border with Turkey, Turkish officials said.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

You could not make this stuff up! I missed this item from last month
"Two Turkish pilots who downed a Russian fighter jet in November 2015 on the Syrian border have been arrested and officials are looking into whether they have links to the Gülen movement, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said during an interview with Al-Jazeera late on July 20."

Source

Last November he said; "President Tayyip Erdogan made no apology, saying his nation had simply been defending its own security and the "rights of our brothers in Syria". He made clear Turkish policy would not change."

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

Three months ago the German parliament decided to categorize the killing of Armenians a century ago by the Turks "genocide" in a resolution. Even though Merkel and Steinmeier had supported the resolution in a test vote in the Bundestag, they didn't take position officially. Now it turns out why.

Apparently, Merkel intends to not recognize that resolution in the hope that Turkey will again grant acess to Incirlik air base for German PMs. Steinmeier is quoted in the Tagesanzeiger with "not every resolution is legally binding".

Once again, sultan Erdowahn is leading Germany/EU by the nose. No wonder he keeps increasing his demands even against previously reached agreements, including visa-free entry to EU.

The lower house of parliament voted almost unanimously, with one vote against the motion and one abstention.
I have avoided critizising Merkel so far but now she has crossed a red line for me

On the positive side this is a good precedent for May to avoid implementing Brexit

I do not believe ISIS is the real target! From the link "Mr Erdogan vowed the offensive would continue until the Islamic State group and the Kurdish Syrian fighters no longer posed a threat to Turkey."

I think the same, Turkey is driving a wedge thru Kurdish controlled areas along the Euphrat's west bank to keep them from connecting with Efrin. Seems there was an agreement between the US and the Kurds (and Turkey?) that the Kurds wouldn't cross the Euphrat.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

The most recent "Spiegel Spezial" on Turkey has Erdowahn rather upset, according to this Tagesanzeiger article (in German). Turkey calls the report "highly provocative", "distorted" and "biased".

Time to pay the local newsstand a visit.

Credit Agency Moody's has downgraded Turkey's Govt. credit rating to junk status. Source

S&P already did this and Fitch have the rating "under review".

The Moody’s cut came a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized rating companies in an interview with Bloomberg in New York. “I don’t care at all” if they downgrade, he said, accusing the ratings companies of making decisions based on politics rather than economic fundamentals.
Source

Not a very clever comment by Erdogan as it will encourage rating agencies to think he will not fix economic problems so driving ratings down!.

First effect is likely to be that Turkey will have make higher interest payments on loans.

To his defense, I think he actually has a point on this one. The rating-agencies have never operated in a political vacuum.

But it just proves that even a broken clock is right twice a day...

Though, of course, if you jail so many intelligent people (and drive more out of the country), that has to have an effect on the economy, regardless.

And today
"Turkey purges 13,000 police officers over failed coup"

Meanwhile following Stalinist policies;
"Over the weekend, Mr Gulen's brother was detained by police in western Turkey - the latest relative to be held.
Mr Gulen's two nephews were detained in July and August."

So many people detained it is surprising the country runs at all; maybe it does not?

Turkey’s tourism industry reels from a year to forget
According to estimates by the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (Türsab), Turkey might lose between £2bn and £2.5bn in tourism revenue by the end of this year.

Source

I am surprised the Sultan did not jail people from the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies for such negative forecasts; like he jailed the financial analysts who gave such forecasts.

Re: What is happening in Turkey tonight?

interesting piece on Turkey and AKP's democratic achievements

Quote:
It is noteworthy that, despite the numerous constitutional amendments and legal packages passed under AKP, there is little to show for this in terms of democracy. If this wasn’t the work of an “enlightened advocate for enhancing democracy” (as the NYT editors initially considered Erdoğan) then what was it? An alternative explanation is that the last decade has had little to do with democracy but rather a shift in power from one set of autocratic elites to another. And the data seems to support this version of events more than the “would-be democrat gone rogue” one.
Quote:
In short, feel free to pick your most (or should I say, least?) favorite takeaway from this: be it that the AKP has been twice as effective in reducing liberal democracy as its predecessors were in increasing it, or that Turkey is today significantly – at least in terms of political institutions – more Middle East and North Africa than Europe. But regardless, the talking point that the AKP has been promoting democracy for any durable period of its tenure, in any of the rigorous ways V-Dem measures it, is simply not supported by state-of-the-art data on democracy. In other words, it may be time to bury some talking points on Turkey.

Sadly that's nothing particularly exceptional for Turkey, with 14 terrorist bombings during the last nine months alone according to wiki.

Erdogan needs to start the peace talks again and give a chunk of Turkey to the Kurds; otherwise there will be ever more deaths of military people who are just being used as "cannon fodder"!

Turkey angry after Swiss tout ‘kebab ban’.

Turkish kebab chefs are up in arms after they misunderstood a spoof campaign to ban the kebab in Switzerland.

Launched by Swiss independent campaigner Daniel Graf, the initiative is actually a satirical comment on Switzerland’s move towards a nationwide ban on wearing the burqa in public

Here is a quote from a Turkish newspaper "Turkish kebab masters slam Swiss anti-kebab campaign"

Sabah is a worthless newspaper; they are not after facts, they just want to stir public attention towards their agenda or mostly away from the real agenda. In this case, the idea was "Look the filthy Europeans are yet again against us"

They put false news articles in and so accuse innocent people. No one cares if they are proven to be wrong the day after; damage is done.

Turkey is being ruled by a schizophrenic narcissist and he is playing with its people like a cat plays with the mouse. Don't expect to make sense of what comes out of Turkey, it won't.
