Foreign worker registration in the UK

There's been some backlash against the UK government (when isn't there?) over their plans to require firms to reveal how many foreign workers they employ; they've been called "xenophobic", "racist", "the nasty party" etc. However, any foreigner living in Switzerland is monitored by the government; where they work, live etc and it has been the case for as long as I can remember. Why are people so shocked?

Are Swiss firms required to display the number of foreigners they employ?

I think the difference is that the Swiss government keeps tabs on ALL its population, native or otherwise.

Everyone has to register with the local authorities then deregister when they move, for example.

I imagine in the UK it's viewed as the native population get to come and go as they please and work wherever they like without too much scrutiny. Foreigners have to go on a list.

It's probably not that dramatic but you can imagine it gets all blown up into a lot of pearl clutching by the media.

I'm not sure, but the government certainly knows where foreigners work and live.

Re: Foreign worker registration in the UK

The suggestion with these Tory plans seems to be that firms would risk some kind of penalty if they employed too many foreigners.

I can't see how they could get round equality legislation by allowing or requiring firms to restrict the number of foreigners they employ and/or give precedence to British job applicants, but perhaps there's a loophole somewhere or perhaps new legislation will be adopted to bring this about.

Whereas in Switzerland, they're restricted from the outset. Which is worse?

But the UK isn't Switzerland. It's a maritime nation and a country of immigration, e.g. from the Commonwealth, and also more recently from the EU, like most other European democracies.

Switzerland has a far higher proportion of immigrants than the UK, second only to Luxembourg in Europe, I believe.

It is also like a badge encouraging discrimination on firms that employ foreigners...

Well, it doesn't sound as if the UK wants to emulate Switzerland!

To get back to your original point, I think people are shocked because such restrictions have not been in place in recent memory in the UK. The Tories are clearly pandering to the xenophobes stirred up by the Leave campaign, who seem to believe and/or have been persuaded to believe that 5% of the population are the root of all evil. Perhaps people are also shocked that the Tories are doing that and that this rather than any practical reason for the good of the nation may be the real motive behind the anti-immigrant agenda. They're saying to the xenophobes "We hear you! Vote for us!". It's about the Tories winning the next election.

From what used to be the official Remain campaign:
Shame on the Government, not foreign workers: e-mail the government

These comments seem to be based on the scandalised media commentary, and not the actual proposals (if there were any). When someone in the UK asked me what I thought about this 'policy' (which I'd not heard about), I tried to research it, but found no actual reference to the idea in the Amber Rudd speech or Theresa May speeches, even though these kept on being referred to as the source of the proposal.

Eventually, it turned out that all this spin is based on an informal conversation that took place between journalists and some Tory MPs at an event after one of the speeches. Nothing seemed to be on the record or verifiable, but before we knew it, the press (particularly the Guardian and The Times) had gone to town on the story, describing it as a requirement for companies to publish lists of names of foreign workers -- even though the government firmly denied any plan to publish lists of names -- just a suggested idea that aggregated data should be available. Too late. This led to the predictable old stuff about the UK turning into Nazi Germany, of course.

From what I can see, the suggestion (it's not even a policy, more a discussion point) is that the government should be able to analyse more easily the employee demographics of various industries to help work out why some industries employ more non-UK people than others. There may be good reasons (foreign workers have the skills not available locally) or bad reasons (foreigners will work more cheaply). Either way, would it not be useful to know? It can help channel resources towards training and education, for instance (as has been announced for the NHS). For the other ones, who import foreigners simply because they will work for less, complain less, and increase profits, why are we defending them? Let the government find out who they are, and ask them tough questions about their employment practices.

But no, much easier to paint "the Tories" as racists pandering to the disgustingly xenophobic, goose-stepping electorate. Life is so much simpler if you treat people as stereotypes and caricatures.

What's good for the goose steppers is good for the rest of us

If you don't want those accusations, then they should set a better example.

that is the theory- in practise not really. Which is why everytime inspectors got to building sites - workers run off and scarper until they've gone, again and again.

Oh, these kinds of foreign workers...
;-)
I just pictured inspectors encircling the buildings of banks at Paradeplatz or in Altstetten and six-figure-salary expats hastily running for the hills, while trying to hold-on to their wireless Beats headphones and a small backpack with their laptop....
