Re: So long Marianne

RIP Leonard Cohen: great songwriter, singer, poet, smooth dresser and cool dude. You will be missed. My favourite song is 'Closing Time'. Legend.

Re: So long Marianne

I was lucky enough to hear him in Paris, with a friend who didn't really know his music (French guy, but still how could you not?). I converted him to the beauty of the music and the lyrics.
Truly an amazing artist. He is irreplaceable.
And no, I can't imagine anyone shedding tears or feeling down at the demise of Beyoncé or JB.

Dance me till the end of time ...

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

We managed to see him when he was at Montreux jazz festival I think three years ago. It was unforgettable. Nothing beats listening to Leonard Cohen with a whisky late at night in front of the open fire on a cold winter night when you feel nostalgic. Dance with me to the end of love.. so long Leonard, maybe just maybe you might meet Marianne where you are now.

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

One of the few English speaking artists that my non-English speaking wife likes (and recognizes easily)!

(however, she pronounces it "Cön")

RIP.

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

I had the chance to sit beside him on an AC flight from YUL to ZRH a few years ago. A very soft, gentle and reserved human being. I felt sorry for him after he had to come out of retirement because of the problems with his business agent. However, some of his best work was in these later years so we the public benefited.

Really a one of a kind person and artist who will be sadly missed.

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

My ex introduced me to leonard Cohen in 1980.
I saw him in the Kongresshaus in 1988 the year I applied for a divorce. He's played a big part in my life, one I think will be revived and thought over again now.
Special man, very special man.

Oh no...

I know, I did write about it the other day, didn't I.

The world has lost a very thoughtful and humane person. His voice was so rich. So were his messages.

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

RIP.

My all time favorite song. I was a kid back then naively falling in love with every girl that I had met ...

P.S. Double impact during the day. I have been equally saddened by Rober Vaughn's death

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

I remember looking at the words of Beautiful Losers the summer after highschool. We had had some of his stuff inflicted on us there. Canlit was mostly presented as a sort of necessary national literary penitence, but my English teacher had given me a copy and said I should read it.

I read it a few years later, this time being old enough to do something other than just look at the words, and was a bit surprised that it was actually a book.

It was full of deep wisdom, including the line:

Never make a decision when you need to pee.

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

Some words from one of his older Songs "Dress Rehearsal Rag":

"Why don't you join the Rosicrucians, they will give you back your hope".

So I did. And they have.

So thanks for that Leonard!

Re: So long Marianne [RIP Leonard Cohen]

With all those fabulous and talented musicians of the 60s and 70s leaving us- one bit of good news our LP collection's value is going up and up ...

So happy we've kept all of them- including the first LP by LC, with Suzanne, etc.
