I agree that EU accession is probably the main reason
Belgrade are playing quite a high stakes game with Brussels. They know that once both Karadzic and Mladic are in the Hague, their EU accession bargaining power will be limited. Therefore its likley that they're holding back the capture and hand over of Ratko Mladic until their accession date (end-2009) is confirmed.

Re: Serbia captures fugitive Karadzic

He was captured because US finally managed to install a government in Belgrade a couple of weeks ago.
A government consisting of democrats and Milosevic's socialists; how bizarre is that?

Serbs are even returning ambassadors to countries from where they've been pulled because of Kosovo. If they swallowed loss of Kosovo, they'll swallow everything else, including extradition of Karadzic, Mladic and their grandmothers.

That's one version. Of course it would be candidature rather than accession in that timeframe. Another version is that Mladic is seriously ill and they delay capturing him hoping that he would die before they have to do it.

Either way it is not an easy choice for the Serbian government, political stakes are high and they have half the electorate supporting political parties that consider the couple national heros and would never have arrested them.

Yes, quite bizarre, but, to quote Shakespare: “Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.”

Kosovo independence was really pushed down their throats, but what can they do? Go to war with NATO again? Hardly an option even if Seselj was not in the Hague.

In my humble opinion, it is good to see a Serbian government with some sense of direction other than off the cliff. And even better for everone around them that they finally decided to look to Europe.

Never a good idea

Karadzic 'aims to defend himself'

Mr Karadzic reinvented himself as a devotee of alternative medicine

War crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic plans to conduct his own defence in his trial at The Hague, his lawyer says.

Re: Serbia captures fugitive Karadzic

Its always a good idea when you had the backing of the US government from 1990 till 1999...... That guy has better bargaining chips than anyone.

Milosovic won his trial. No one will testify (from the US or Russia) so why wouldnt you defend your self?

Very interesting write up in todays G2 in the Gruniad

The Edge of Madness : outlines how Karadzic was living in full view in Belgrade after the ceasefire & also hints at some dubious "diplomatic" deals done with UK & US, very interesting reading.

also, for the record Serbia does not recognise Kosova as a sovereign state & Russia has bloscked this at the UN as well.

The long beard and the dishevelled look was a poor choice for a disguise. It has been tried before by other prominent war criminals, with little success.

I guess it's still better than a carnival costume with a wooden duck on your head and a miniature trumpet. (Black Adder Goes Fourth)

Of course Serbia will not recognise it, but that does not mean that Kosovo will ever be part of Serbia again. It is irretrievably lost and they'd better deal with other things where progress can be made.

The fact that Kosovo will not become a UN Member States in any foreseeable future does not in practice mean very much, simply because the majority of EU Member States and USA recognised it anyway. Russia's position in any case has little if anything to do with her 'friendly' relations with Serbia.

I was watching the CNN live coverage from Hague yesterday and I found it very interesting. Personally I find the Hague a big joke. Bush and his cronies would be top of my list for crimes against humanity.

Karadzic has just been found guilty on most charges, of crimes against humanity, genocide, murder, etc etc. sentence is 40 years imprisonment.
