Re: Palin thread .. no not Michael

Matt Tiabbi at Rolling Stone isn't exactly holding back ....

The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America

"She totally reminds me of my cousin!" the delegate screeched. "She's a real woman! The real thing!"

I stared at her open-mouthed. In that moment, the rank cynicism of the whole sorry deal was laid bare. Here's the thing about Americans. You can send their kids off by the thousands to get their balls blown off in foreign lands for no reason at all, saddle them with billions in debt year after congressional year while they spend their winters cheerfully watching game shows and football, pull the rug out from under their mortgages, and leave them living off their credit cards and their Wal-Mart salaries while you move their jobs to China and Bangalore.

And none of it matters, so long as you remember a few months before Election Day to offer them a two-bit caricature culled from some cutting-room-floor episode of Roseanne as part of your presidential ticket. And if she's a good enough likeness of a loudmouthed Middle American archetype, as Sarah Palin is, John Q. Public will drop his giant-size bag of Doritos in gratitude, wipe the Sizzlin' Picante dust from his lips and rush to the booth to vote for her. Not because it makes sense, or because it has a chance of improving his life or anyone else's, but simply because it appeals to the low-humming narcissism that substitutes for his personality, because the image on TV reminds him of the mean, brainless slob he sees in the mirror every morning.

Sarah Palin is a symbol of everything that is wrong with the modern United States. As a representative of our political system, she's a new low in reptilian villainy, the ultimate cynical masterwork of puppeteers like Karl Rove. But more than that, she is a horrifying symbol of how little we ask for in return for the total surrender of our political power. Not only is Sarah Palin a fraud, she's the tawdriest, most half-assed fraud imaginable, 20 floors below the lowest common denominator, a character too dumb even for daytime TV — and this country is going to eat her up, cheering her every step of the way. All because most Americans no longer have the energy to do anything but lie back and allow ourselves to be jacked off by the calculating thieves who run this grasping consumer paradise we call a nation.

for a moment I almost felt sorry for her .... then reason kicked back in

Not specifically about Sarah Palin but watch for her at the end - The RNC in a minute!

And if that completely freaked you out (like it did me) take some time to have a laugh with Bill Hicks at creationists:

What a vile, nasty woman. Just watch the video and see for yourself just how low she has sunk since coming to Washington. I used to be completely ambivelent towards this former beauty queen, hockey mom but now I completely despise her.

Palin makes Obama terrorist claim

Sarah Palin accuses Obama of associating with 'a domestic terrorist'

US Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin has accused the Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, of associating with terrorists.
She said he had been "palling around" with an ex-member of US-based militant group Weather Underground, which opposed the Vietnam War in the 1960s.
Mr Obama once served on a charity board with a member of the group, but he has denounced its activities. A Democratic spokesman accused the Republicans of gutter politics.

It is (too) easy to poke fun at her but listen to this piece and understand how truly scary she is:

Re: Palin thread .. no not Michael

I'd posted this elsewhere, but it seems more fitting here, Sarah Palin to take to the sky

"I know there are those who will mock pilots from small towns. We small-town pilots know better. Charles Lindbergh grew up in Little Falls, Minn., whose population of 7,719 is about the same size as my hometown of Wasilla.

"I may be just a hockey mom whose kids flew thousands of miles at the expense of the taxpayers of Alaska, but I know airplanes. Straight Talk Air is a Boeing 737-300. That is a shorter version of the earlier Boeing 707. It has a wingspan of 94 feet and 8 inches. And it's a jet! I can't wait to get my hands on the steering wheel and put the pedal to the metal."

The campaign announced that it had no plans for Palin to meet with representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration, at least until they proved themselves sufficiently respectful and deferential. One campaign official explained, "Federal micro-management of aviation is just the sort of regulation that is strangling the American economy."

A conservative network soon broadcast a report about Palin's hitherto ignored aviation background. As mayor of Wasilla, she was responsible for the Wasilla Municipal Airport, which has a 3,700-foot paved runway and dozens of tie-downs. As governor, Palin is the commander of the Alaska Air National Guard. Palin has several airline credit cards and a large number of unused frequent flier miles, and can see actual airplanes flying overhead from her front yard. Alaska has its own airline, unlike Illinois and Delaware.

The liberal media launched the predictable attack on Palin's qualifications. Network camera crews were dispatched to double check whether the Wasilla Airport is really a full 3,700 feet long. Investigative reporters stood in front of Palin's Wasilla home counting the number of airplanes that could be seen with the naked eye.

A national financial newspaper denounced the obvious double standard. "No one would be asking all these questions if Sarah Palin were a man. Who says that women can't fly --what about Amelia Earhart? Experience? Wilbur Wright, unlike Sarah Palin, had never even been in an airplane the first time he flew at Kitty Hawk. If the airplane had been invented by the Wright sisters, the male establishment would never have let it get off the ground."

The McCain campaign released a new television commercial titled "Treason in the Skies." The commercial points out that while the McCain plane, a Boeing 737, is used by Georgian Airways, the Obama plane -- a Boeing 757 -- is flown by Siberian Airlines and Mid East Jet, and in some models is powered by Rolls-Royce engines, built in a country with which the United States has fought two wars. The ad asks, "If Barack Obama thinks there is nothing wrong in using the same airplane preferred or even built by America's enemies, is he really ready to be commander in chief?"

At the end of an exhilarating day on the campaign trail, Palin addressed another adoring crowd. "What's the difference," she asked, "between a hockey mom and the commander of a B-52 fully loaded with thermonuclear weapons? Goggles and a silk scarf!"
