TV presenter Tony Hart dies at 83

He had a pretty good innings and made a lot of kids (me included) rush off and do slightly more creative things than have another He-Man v Skeletor fight. RIP Tony

TV presenter Tony Hart dies at 83

Tony Hart appeared on the shows Vision On and Take Hart

Artist and children's presenter Tony Hart has died, aged 83.
Hart, who lived in Surrey, had suffered from health problems for a number of years, including two strokes. His family said he died peacefully.
Mr Hart appeared on art programmes for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2001 because of health problems.
He first appeared on Saturday Special as an illustrator before fronting his own shows such as Vision On, Take Hart and Hartbeat.
The artist served as an officer in the 1st Gurkha Rifles in World War II, before joining a course at Maidstone College of Art.
It was a chance meeting in 1952 with a BBC TV producer and a demonstration of his quick art skills on a paper napkin that secured his on-screen career.
Hart became resident artist on the Saturday Special programme that year.
Subsequent TV shows included Playbox, Titch and Quackers, Vision On, Take Hart, Hartbeat and Smart Hart.
From 1977 he appeared with animated clay character Morph, who lived in a pencil box.
Hartbeat often attracted 5.4 million viewers and Hart's mailbag varied between 6,000 and 8,000 per week. He received two Bafta awards, one a lifetime achievement award in 1998, and also created the original design for the Blue Peter badge. In an interview last year he said not being able to draw after suffering two strokes was the "greatest cross I have to bear."

Ditto Oliver Postgate. My sister sent a Bagpuss DVD for our 20 m.o. as a Christmas present and he is addicted. IMHO Bagpuss was quite well put together - one episode even had a Chinese folk story.

Cheers,
Nick

The great contrast I've noticed between old fashioned children's television programmes (at least the classic BBC ones... the commercial channels were always a little more raucous) and many modern ones is their peacefulness.

Ivor the Engine (I thought it was plain boring, but I'm sure it was popular in Wales), Bagpuss (I like to think that I am the inheritor of Professor Yaffle's pedantic crown), the Clangers, Take Hart.... all so very quiet, and lovely.

Doing evening care at my previous school, I let some of the younger children watch an episode of the Clangers on youtube. Nothing happened for the entire first minute, as the narrator introduced their home planet in a big empty space, yet the children were utterly transfixed, and never said a word until it was over. Magical!

Mind, I also loved Tiswas, so that shows how much consistency I've got...

Vision On was one of my favourites as a child. Tony was years ahead of his time.

Re: TV presenter Tony Hart dies at 83

Tony Hart was the first artist I saw on TV as a kid and I loved those programmes too..

I agree entirely with DB regarding the *quietness* of the older shows. Today I do not understand why they have to tell kids everything when drawing a picture, they do not seem able to allow kids to figure it out for themselves - rather patronizing. In Tony Hart's day a picture was a picture and there was no need to talk it through, the thing spoke for itself - a more intelligent approach to TV and it's audience don't you think?

BTW, I ended up doing a Fine Art Painting Degree.. makes me wonder thinking back to those shows

Re: TV presenter Tony Hart dies at 83

Having watched some of those "arty" programmes with my daughter when she was younger, (smART springs to mind) I often thought the presenters were on something - they were so loud and over-the-top.
And Blue Peter......well

I also grew up with Tony Hart and now he's gone I feel it's the end of an era.....
