| | | Gordon Brown to apologise for Britain's Child Migrants program
Gordon Brown is planning to apologise for the UK's role in sending thousands of its children to former colonies in the 20th century, the BBC has learned.
Tomorrow, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is to deliver an apology to a group known as the " Forgotten Australians".
From the Australian Parliament House report here: | Quote: | | | | Child migrants
Child migration began as an experiment in social engineering designed to re-locate underprivileged children from over-crowded and impoverished living conditions in Britain to the colonies where they could be of use as labourers and domestic servants. Background
Under the Empire Settlement Act of 1922 and 1937, the British Government assisted private organisations to help people who wanted to settle in His Majestys Overseas Dominions. Although not specifically aimed at assisting child migrants, this legislation allowed non-government organisations to send child migrants to various parts of the British Empire.
The scheme intensified after the war when child migrants were sent under the Childrens Act 1948. Although non-government organisations had direct charge of most of the children at the recruitment stage, during their passage, or after their arrival in the receiving countries, they received encouragement and financial backing from British governments and governments in receiving countries.
About 150 000 children with an average age of eight years and nine months emigrated from the United Kingdom, the majority to Canada, until the scheme ended in 1967. [4] A key motivation for child migration was to maintain the racial unity of the Empire and populate the Dominions of Canada, Rhodesia, New Zealand and Australia, with good white stock.
The exact number of child migrants to Australia is not known, but estimates suggest that from 1947 to 1967, between 7000 and 10 000 children were sent to Australia. [5] A feature of the scheme was the care of children in residential institutions rather than by foster care or adoption. Most were placed in the care of Barnardos, the Fairbridge Society, the Church of England and the Christian Brothers. [6]
The House of Commons Health Committee concluded that children were placed in large, often isolated, institutions and were often subjected to harsh, sometimes intentionally brutal, regimes of work and discipline, unmodified by any real nurturing or encouragement. The institutions were inadequately supervised, monitored and inspected. [7] | | | | | Makes you wonder what horrors in our lifetime are yet to be uncovered.

Very interesting, my great-grandmothers siblings where scattered through out Canada, Australia and the States. One Aunt in Australia was only made known to us when she died and left money.
They were a large Irish family who came to Liverpool to escape the hunger and were shipped out by Bernardo's.

In a few hours, some 900 child migrant survivors will be at Parliament House, Canberra ( my "orphaned" step dad included ) to hear the formal apology delivered by Mr. Kevin Rudd.
He will deliver a national apology to the "Forgotten Australians'' and recognise the mistreatment and continuing suffering of about 500,000 people held in orphanages or children's homes between 1930 and 1970.
The national apology will be combined with another to the 7000 child migrants from Britain who live still in Australia.

I'd be more impressed if he apologised for his own cock-ups.

Apology to be delivered in Australia in a few minutes.
Among those in parliament's Great Hall for Monday's apology was former senator Andrew Murray, who was born in Britain but sent to Zimbabwe as a child migrant at the age of four. Of Mr Brown's apology, Joan Taylor, chairman of the trustees of the Child Migrants' Trust, said: "It's about time. Both Governments knew what was happening and did nothing to stop it and I think an apology should have happened many, many years ago. I would have preferred the British Government to have been the first one but they have announced that they are going to make the apology and that's important." Discovered an article about Britain's Child Migrants today here: | Quote: | | | | Some were orphans, others from broken homes. Still more, among them Bayliff, Lee and their siblings Sidney and Graham, were sent by parents who believed the official propaganda that Australia offered their children a carefree future.
Yet many were abused by the Fairbridge Society, Dr Barnardo's and the Christian Brothers, institutions entrusted with their care.
Years after he had escaped, Bayliff was sent a cheque for the eight years of work he had done on the farm. It was for just over a dollar. He never cashed it

I've played gigs at Fairbridge and knowing the stuff that went down in there was really spooky. My old man hated the christian brothers when he went to one of their schools in Perth. Really nasty pieces of work and years later he found out how nasty they really were!

I actually wonder if the people effected really give a hoot as I cannot see a statement from Gordon Brown making any difference.
To me all this going around apologising for something they didn't instigate makes absolutley no sense to me and just seems to be a trend/fashion.

For one, I know a few people involved in the stolen generation in Australia and they mentioned that it gave them closure on the issue. Sometimes a symbolic gesture is just what people need to get on with their lives. A lot of these people still think it was their fault they were taken away. Its not gonna take away the pain, but sometimes closure is the next best thing

Along with Jimmy Bee, include myself ( Australia ) and Nicky ( UK ) as knowing some people close enough who were affected, for whom validation and recognition was important.
