Kashmir: Why not give it up, and have a party?

Kashmir: It's basically Pakistan, isn't it, so why not give it up?

Yes, why not?

It'll settle the Sikh problem once and for all, won't it?

Who are "we" to give it up? Are we owners or some big uncle to hold people back? I personally feel any unit of people, who wants to get away and join another country or become an independent state, should be allowed to do so.

Done my bit for the country by serving in the forces during major hostilities etc, so don't groan me for unpatriotism, but I am not a big fan of the concept of nation.

I don't believe so.

Kashmir is a troublesome drain upon Indian military resources. Why not give it up to Pakistan, restore normal relations with that country, and stop being all colonial about it?

That kind of thing is terribly passé, you know.

I reckon China should get it. Looks to me like they are just as close to it geographically and considering their ruthless efficiency they could churn out cashmere jumpers at twice the rate of either India or Pakistan, so its only logical they win it.

Re: Kashmir: Why not give it up, and have a party?

Really, it's a shame that the British Empire came to a close at all, when you look at all the problems the lack of proper governance has caused across the world over the last 60 years or so.

If Britain was still in charge of India, there wouldn't have been partition, Kashmir would still be the Switzerland of the Himalaya, and everything would be lovely.

Same with Cyprus, East Africa, and all those other places that have gone to pot since the British withdrew.

Zimbabwe should be added and possibly the USA too

Re: Kashmir: Why not give it up, and have a party?

The one and only time I had a chance to talk to somebody from Kashmir, I naturally asked: "Do you feel more Indian or Pakistani?"

The reply "I feel Kashmiri!" led not only to an interesting discussion, but to the question why any of the three countries should "have" the region. Why not independence? Would potentially be good for the safety of all living in the region to have a relatively small, unthreatening country in between the three powers anyway.

Who, I've no idea, but possibly due to the high probability that this thread is going to down like one.
