Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

Broken Britain.
That report though is a little unclear, the average household income has shrunk - this is surely because of the exchange rate and probably has very little to do with an actual reduction in wages.

Also putting Spain and France up there as more desirable places to live than Britain is a tad weird. Spain is more broken than Britain and France is on a 7 day strike currently.

Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

Yep, the place is really going down the pan

Frost in the orchard this morning, so got cold tootsies when I wandered out in my bare feet

Attachment 19871

and now the wind's dropped, so probably not worth sailing later

Attachment 19872

Can't wait to get back to ZH, and all those friendly neighbours, low prices and good weather
not to mention the endless supplies of brown sugar and self-raising flour

Great Britain is the greatest land the world has ever known. Switzerland is a green and mountainous Saudi Arabia (fake, temporary, new-rich source of wealth, everything important, one-resource economy, hyper-expensive).

Is it still "Broken Britain" now that the Tories have got in?!

"Broken Britain" is a hackneyed phrase suitable only for lazy, politically motivated journalists.

Whoah !!! As soon as I can think of what is wrong with that statement, I am going to tear it apart... Just you wait. The minute I see something wrong with. Bear with me... Watch me.

I mean...ancient Rome had more sickness and crime than a random vineyard in western Iberia but that's mainly because everyone lived there....all this stomping about claiming Switzerland is the messianic land is just maddening.

France is on a 7 day strike currently.
Maybe strikes are one of the reasons why France did not privatized (sold off) the entire society and did not slash down the part state institution and private compagnies have to play in order to make people's life sweeter. Maybe. Juste maybe.

Or French governments are by nature reasonnable empathyful and turned toward the future for the wellbeing of the population with no interest whatsoever to give up social politics against lobbying from the richest and the big industry. A history of tens of ethical governments with a real love to their nexts. That would be the other possibility.

Which one seems more likely?

I didn't understand any of that. France is on strike because an inability to see the reasoning behind the need to increase the retirement age to 62 in the face of an economic collapse, is the penalty of the welfare state. It has turned the workers of France into children. Here's what should happen: retire any time you like - feel like retiring at 28? Great, go for it. But I hope you've been responsible and saved for it, like any rational human being, rather than relied on successive governments that you knew could have vastly different ideological views on welfare in general. Fools.

Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

The topic being "the worse/best place to live" with criterias given in the article, I was just llinking them to the reality of French strikes. I have no declaration to make as to their justification. I just read the article and made the link with strikes. That's all.

One can also admit that the article is just BS and that wellbeing, "best place" and other "I feel good" criterias are of no use what so ever and that there are no meaningful conclusion to be drawn from such statistics. One can.

Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

I can't speak for this survey, as I understand it is based on some esoteric economic criteria that aren't intended to be understood by the likes of me, but one reason that Britain always comes bottom of "happiness", "confidence" and "satisfaction" surveys is that we actually enjoy being pessimistic, in comparison to other nations where silly notions of positive attitude and optimism are valued.

Ask an Englishman or a Scot if he's happy, or if he thinks his country is heading for prosperity, or if he thinks things have got better under this/the last government, and you'll rarely get an "of course, mate, everything's rosy and getting positively rosier". It's just not the way we do things.

England is a dump, but I love it. It is scruffy, down-at-heel, ill-maintained and dirty, but it is also busy, noisy, friendly, interesting and it has good beer.

It might be the worst place to live according to some survey off the internet, but if I was offered a job there* I would seriously consider living there again.

*depends where, though.

Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

Bizarrely- some places in the UK have a terrible reputation - but are in fact great places to live. I lived in one of those for more than 30 years. Great market, and now fabulous shops with great architecture, wonderful rolling countryside, ironstone and granit villages, bluebell woods galore, great parks, easy access to the Peaks, Cotswolds, London, Cambridge, Stratford, Lincoln and Norfolk and so much more. And a buzz found in few places - a muticultural City that actually works well (most of the time). I am proud to have made ..... Leicester my home for such a long time. I just love going back and get that buzz all over again, and of course visit great friends.

Surprised - well yes my OH's family are all from darn South - and were always amazed at our great facilities and wonderful countryside, Abbeys, castles, small market towns, etc.

Re: Great Britain - Worst Place to Live

Oh Britain how I miss thee.

Oh how I miss not being a guest in a country.

Oh how I miss foreigners come to ME asking me to call x person or where is a good place to live in Glasgow (the list is short).

Oh how I miss the coast (I hardly ever went but that's hardly the point)

Oh how I miss nipping down the chippie when dinner wasn't cooked and it NOT costing me a fortune

Oh how I miss driving and not constantly wondering if I'm on the correct side of the road...or if that person is going to cross and I should stop.

Oh how I miss not limiting my vocabulary and speaking slowly so that the Swiss can understand what I say.

Oh how I miss having 6 acres of land in the back garden

Oh how I miss not living in an apartment.

I miss you Britain..

On another note I searched the survey on the uswitch site

http://www.uswitch.com/news/money/uk...-index-890419/

And it appears the 'yoo kay' actually came 9th and Ireland 10th. Also Switzerland isn't above them. I mean there are more than 10 countries in Europe right?

I came last out of 1 in a race once.
