| | | Moving to Baar, (Kanton Zug), Switzerland in Feb 2008
Well, I hope. I'm still going through the process of getting a B-Permit right now, so it's all a bit up in the air, but I hope it goes well.
So, now that that's done, here's a bit more about me.
I'm Asian (Malaysian-Chinese, 26/M), planning on moving to Switzerland to work with an investment management firm in Baar. For the last 5 years I've been living in Australia, finishing off two bachelors degrees at the University of Sydney, before landing this role fresh out of University. I expect I'll be in Switzerland for 2 years or so, then move on to somewhere else.
I do vaguely remember some things from 1 semester of introductory German, but beyond that, my German is approximately zero. I'm hoping to pick up some more--or at least, the reading part since I know Swiss German does not necessarily sound anything like High German.
What do I like? Well, let's see, good literature, art, theatre, classical music. Anything else? Martial arts (kendo, fencing and Taekwondo right now but that may change).
Anyway, this is just an introduction and a quick thanks for the existence of this forum, which has helped clear up some of the apprehension I felt at the thought of moving into a new place soon.

Hi, Lucas. Welcome to EF, and to Switzerland soon.
Just bring some Tim-Tams and ya'll be fine.
Baar is just down the road from Zug. Pretty little town.

Thanks Argus,
I'll be sure to keep that in mind. I must say though, I'm not a big fan of Tim Tams. (Please don't scream "sacrilege" and start planning out the stake and the fire and all that...) Rarely indulge in it (usually only when visiting friends and they bring it out and literally stuff one into my hand).
But I probably will miss it more when I'm no longer able to buy it easily.
And thanks Pjoe,
Gosh, I haven't read Malay in such a long time (well, except for the occasional signboard when I'm visiting family in Malaysia). Glad to see that I still remember how to read it.
I'm glad to see that there *are* Malaysians in Switzerland. Just out of curiosity, is there some kind of Malaysian expatriates association in Switzerland? I know (from a Singaporean friend) that there is an association for expatriate Singaporeans living in Switzerland, but haven't yet been able to determine if there's one for Malaysians.
Thanks again.

There's one large investment company some 30meters from where i live on Zugerstrasse. Gut tells me you may be just around the corner.
Must confess you're already exhibiting a high level of 'Swissness' by testing waters half a year before the move.
Anyway, drop me a line. I can give you heads up with what's where.
Best
