New Canadians in Bern

Hello,

My family and I have recently moved to Switzerland from Canada. I have just graduated from university there, and have come to take a job here in Bern. We have been here for around two weeks now, have changed all our plugs, successfully battled the permit system, gotten the kids into school, and are slowly adapting to life with no car. No bikes yet! Our first German classes are tonight.

So far everyone here has been very nice to us, I am amazed at how well foreigners are treated here.

English Forum seems like a very useful site, lots of times googling I wind up here. I especially like the Marketplace forum, as we are new here, and I believe re-use is the very best form of recycling. We are planning on heading to the brockenhaus in Bümplitz on the weekend..

Cheers to all at English Forum!

Re: New Canadians in Bern

Where do you meet for drinks? I spent 3 months here last year, and I searched around a bit and could not find a decent English-style pale or brown ale anywhere. I am currently drinking canned Abbot ale from the shop in the Banhof. Any suggestions?

English Pub called the Pickwick in centre of town ... brr nasty, ok for the odd sporting event, otherwise to be ignored.

We tend to meet at the Altes Tramdepot, by the bear pits at the bottom of the Altstadt (also close to postcode 3013 .. ). Have a look at the site, only micro-brewery for kilometres around.

They have three standard beers & also have a number of guests, that are either brewed on site, or brought in for a few weeks from Germany.

will be organising another bash hopefully tis week coming. Keep you eye out for Bern Livers & Lovers in the social events thread.
