Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

Hi all,

I live in the Bellinzona / Locarno area and I would really like to meet new people for drinks, laughs, walks etc... so if anyone is interested please let me know and perhaps we can meet up. (FYI I'm a 30yr old male from the UK)

Thanks!

I know this is an old post but. Are you still living there? Did/have you met many people?

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

Hi guys,
A few more English speakers here. We are in San Nazzaro. Moved here from Australia. A year has gone by and slowly mingling with the Ticinese. Not an easy task I must say. Our 14 year old son, an extremely friendly Aussie has struggled to make friends. Any teenagers among any of you? Should get together for a barbie before it gets too cold.

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

A friend lives in Magadino, after first living in Vira.

He has a couple of teenage daughters (17), who frequently come down from ZH, but while he speaks English (mother tongue), they don't.

Mine are older (20, 23), but are soon leaving for other pastures (Berna, SoCal), but do speak English (the one moving to BE (23) lives in Vallemaggia).

everyone left when they closed down Paddy Reilly's!

There are lots of younger English-speakers in Lugano with TASIS and Franklin College....

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

Hi Georgia,
Welcome to kind of dead Locarno at the moment. Pity you missed out on the Locarno on Ice that was on for the whole of Dec. That would have been a great opportunity to meet people your age. Most young Ticinese speak at least a little bit of English and they welcome any opportunity to practice it... so good luck in meeting some. Talking to my bank agent who is your age, the winter activities are the Locarno Lido, Splash in Tamaro, skiing and snow boarding in Bosco Gurin or Airolo (both less than an hour away) and Vanilla Club for dancing.
Lugano offers a lot more (still a bit dead during winter though). There are a couple of language schools, therefore, young english speaking esl teachers are always arriving. Found this on my fb and thought it could interest you: www.internations.org (its a Lugano Expat Event).
"It is a pleasure to invite you to the next ‪#‎InterNations‬ event in ‪#‎Lugano‬ on Tuesday, January 21st, from 7:00pm onwards. We are heading to a wonderful venue to enjoy delicious appetizers and drinks in a lovely atmosphere. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to have a great night with fellow ‪#‎expats‬ and other globally minded people from all around the world!"
Best of luck and again, welcome to Locarno and hope you like living here. If I can help you in any way, give me shout. I have daughters your age living abroad on their own and us also, coming here not speaking the language and not knowing anyone.... itīs not easy. Take care

Strange, almost none of them ever speak it to me!

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

aaaawwwhh :-( Thatīs a shame. I find that when ever I am struggling to express something in Italian they beg me to speak to them in English so they can practice lol and of course I refuse as I want to learn Italian

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

Hi Cecilia, apologies for the late reply - been getting on my feet at work and at home and I now also know where Minusio is .

Thank you for the welcome Cecil65

Its been intresting and fun the last month, a South African climatsing to the very cold weather and yes I know this is the South which is warmer than the North but Im glad then Im in the South.

We are finding Italian hard but the locals are always willing to help if you try and in the next week or two we start our classes.

Other than that, looking for an apartment from Losone right through to Tenero but I think we will try hard for something in Locarno, clsoe to my work as I enjoy the walking - Not missing my car at all - its convinient but a headache at that.

Have a good evening or should I rather say and this is without google translate - Buon un Pomeriggio

Ciao Ciao

Re: Any English Speakers in the Locarno / Bellinzona Area?

Hi
I'm jeanette , I'm originally from the uk, however my husbands job, means I'm now living in Locarno, I'm currently on maternity leave from my job in the uk, as I have a 9 month old daughter, if anybody would like to meet for a coffee/ wine , that would be great as I'm pretty much alone all day whilst he's at work
Thanks in advance
Jay
