G'Day from Sydney

Hello All,

** will try to keep it short and to the point **

My name is Jeff and Iam from Sydney.
My job involves me driving to multiply customer sites.
My area that I will be servicing will be south of Zurich.
I think I will look to live in the Lucern area.
I Start 1st May.
I speak ok German ( Iam Australian born, mum / dad from Germany )

Got a four year old girl and another girl about to pop out of my wife soon.

Going through the hassels of selling my cars and house in Sydney... any buyers ???

I will arrive in Zurich around 20th April, my wife will arrive maybe 2-3 months later. Need to organise a apartment / house and wait for the furniture to arrive from Sydney.

Does anyone know of Share Accomodation Websites or cheap studio appartments for rent ( Zurich / Lucern area ), while I look for a apartment for my family ?

Also need some advise with another question, the type of car I should buy.
I've been on the scout24.ch website. As I will be on the road most of the
day, and have a family , I was thinking of buying a second hand Mercedes B Class ( or equivalent ) . However , if I buy a 4x4 ( Landrover or Audi Quattro ) do I still need winter tyres ?

Are there any Mothers Groups in the Zurich / Lucerne area where my wife can catch up with other English Mums for coffee, kids play days etc..... ?

Thanks
Regards Jeff
Sydney , Australia

ps. sorry I tried it keep it short. I ramble on sometimes

Welcome to the Forum.

Have a look at the Sticky Threads at the top of the various sections for a start. They'll give you a few basic bits to work on. You've a load of hassle ahead! I like cheering people up!

Lots of folk on here to help out with specific questions though. Good luck

Welcome from another Sydneysider and good luck with your move.

Can't answer any of your questions specifically as I'm on the other side of Switzerland but I am sure you will find all the info you need here on EF.

Good luck with the move and the new baby. How come these big life-changing events always seem to happen together? It was the same for me.

Re: G'Day from Sydney

Hi Jeff,

I'm a member of a mothers group in ZRH, but haven't been attending any coffee meetings so far (shame on me) because I've been busy organizing our move from Zurich to the Lucerne area.

I have a 4,5 month old daughter and my partner is also from Sydney. I have been living in Switzerland for about 4 years now and would be happy to show your wife around when she arrives.

Oh and yeah even with a 4x4 you'll need those winter tires...

I live in Birmensdorf which is on the outskirts of Zurich. About half an hour from Lucerne. No kids so can't help with the mothers club but always keen for a coldy after work.... Even in the freezing cold strangly enough....

Welcome to the forum and best of luck with the move mate...

Re: G'Day from Sydney

G'day back Jeff,

Welcome to Zurich. I live just over the hill from Adliswil in Kilchberg (2 minutes by car). I don't have kids but do know an Australian family in Adliswil with 3 kids that could possibly give you some tips on schools. And we'd love to extend the Australian network here. I know they'd love to get to know other Aussie kids.
Send me a private message if you'd like to get in touch.

Re: G'Day from Sydney

G'day Jeff and others
For accom check out www.hompage.ch/rent. I am considering a job offer in Kloten at the moment. Big move from the Southern Highlands NSW. Could be there not long after you with wife and 12 yo son to follow. Does anyone have an opinion on the International Schools? We don't speak enough German for the public system.
I can bowl a half decent leggy and handy with the bat down the order! BTW the Aussies are hammering the Indians!

Re: G'Day from Sydney

Whilst we are Ozzying up; we are moving to Geneva around August. I am getting on (44 years old) but can still bowl military medium seam up and was opening the batting for Royal Brussels anew years ago.
Will miss the footy and cricket but we love skiing so we are looking forward to the move.
Hope to catch up for few beers one day with some of you.
