Looking to meet some new friends, moving to St Gallen

Hi guys!

I am a 23 year old female and have lived in Australia my whole life and I am moving to St Gallen in February to work as an Au pair for one year. I've never done Au pair work, so it will be a new experience living with a family and learning a new culture and language. I'm really excited! Very nervous though about the language barrier, as I don't know any German yet, but will be learning it when I arrive.

Um, what else? I live with my Mum and sister and fat dog named Kiki. I live in Melbourne and it's currently Summer here and the weather has been awesome lately, so it will be a transition coming to the cold Swiss weather. I don't even own that much Winter clothing to be honest lol.

Anyway, looking to meet new friends while in Switzerland, so if you guys are interested in catching up or keeping in touch, I would love to hear from you.

Toodles

Hello Tebetha,

Welcome! I know exactly how you feel, coz I moved here in St Gallen almost one year and a half and learning this language is not fun! And I am still taking a course. If you have any questions feel free to ask, and I would like to meet up and meet new friends too, maybe we could arrange something!
Hope to see you soon!

Hi,
I am also new to this forum and new to St Gallen, having moved here from the UK in January. I am working at a school here after finishing University in the UK. If you would like to meet up for a coffee when you arrive I would be happy to meet up.
Safe journey

Hello. Just wondering how you got the job as Au pair. Did you go through an agent in Australia? Thanks. Keith
I'm also from Australia ( Melbourne )-working in an Elderly peoples home in nursing.

Re: Looking to meet some new friends, moving to St Gallen

Hi Tebetha,

I completely understand how it feels! I'm an 18yo Australian (I live in Geelong) who moved to Switzerland at the start of the year to be an au pair. I've never done this before, but love it!

I am currently living in Gais, 25min from St Gallen by train, and do my German course twice a week in St Gallen.

Aah, how I miss summer already, but am loving the winter. Brace yourself - it was -11° here today! And the best thing is to just buy all the warm clothes over here... not too much winter stuff in stock in Australia at the moment

Anyway, good luck, and hopefully we could catch up at some stage? Although I do speak German, I miss speaking English

Claire

Hi Tebetha,

Im also 23 but from South Africa, which is many ways is like Australia (we have a better rugby team though)! I live near Vevey which is a bit far from you but if you every head this direction let me know.

I have been in Switzerland for 10 years now and it is a fantastic country! You will enjoy it.

Re: Looking to meet some new friends, moving to St Gallen

Perhaps create a social event on the calendar?

People are more likely to come along if there is a bit of concrete info on where and when you'd like to get together. Find a place, transport info, basic 'what to expect' and away you go. You get more exposure for an event if it's on the calendar and get to see RSVPs. The worst case is nobody shows interest, so simply repeat until you're hanging out with some cool people. It works! (We have EF babies elsewhere, so it really does work...)

Well if you enroll in a language school then in 6 months you can speak reasonably fluent German
