Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

Small fine coming your way, you were only just over the 10% bracket. Best pay the fine, as friend of mine picked up some fines in a hire car Geneva about four years ago ..thought nothing of it as never got chased. Then when he was about to leave Zurich airport about a year ago, he was flagged up forced to pay 950chf fines (interest and inflation adjusted) and had to pay to rebook himself another flight (400chf) as they clearly were not letting him on the one he intended to get on.

Lesson is : dont speed, if you do make sure you pay

if its a hire car then the hire company pay the fines for you.. something went seriously wrong for the above to happen

From what others have posted before on this subject; the hire firm pays.... then they chase you for the fine + costs, usually through your credit card details. So yes, if 'the friend' wasn't found before, there was a problem. But odd things do happen here.

The swiss will chase the plates through the DVLA and contact her home address, which is possibly still listed as in the UK?
Hopefully there's someone there to forward the post.

Happened to hubby a few years ago (parking fine though, not speeding), they traced him eventually.... took months.
When I was first over here, back in 2000/2001, I accrued a number of parking tickets, none of which I paid. When we finally switched the car to Swiss plates after two and a bit years (it was officially my wife's car and she came over later than me) I was expecting all sorts of trouble, but in the event nothing whatsoever happened.

Of course, things have changed since then, but I was quite surprised that the UK number wasn't flagged up, either when stopped at customs and made to declare it (I was over the time limit slightly) or when we did the plate swap.
