New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and Switzerland and would like some advice new . I started a job in Switzerland two months ago and think I have been caught speeding on my way home from work. I was overtaking a lorry on the A1 in a tunnel and think I was flashed. The limit i8 80Km/h and I think I was doing 90km/h. I still have my English plates but would like to know if I'm likely to receive a fine and if so around how much it will be for? I have heard horror stories of people paying over 1000chf for a fine. Is this true? Would appreciate any help on this! thanks

Not first person to ask. Search function. Works well.

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

I am not sure if it is for real....

Look on the forum, you'll find plenty of thread about this exact same topic. One is from today.

Why people come on this forum to ask a question about something only the police can really answer?

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

hi, thanks I have checked them out I was just wondering if things had changed since. Some people I work with have said that the fines have increased recently and I wanted to check if anyone knew if that was the case. But will recheck threads.

Don't people come onto the forums to ask questions of 'supposedly' friendly peers because they do not know who else to ask. My husband was flashed by a speed camera yesterday and that is why I looked at this thread.
I would not even know which department I would call to ask a question like that. I don't have the language and I rely on well-meaning people on these forums to help me out.
...And I clicked on this thread from the home page, before you ask me why I didn't use the search function!

Many tunnels have continuous lines which mean you are not allowed to overtake. Was this the case?

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

you will get the bill in the mail, usually takes anywhere from 2-6 weeks. if you were indeed 10km over in an 80km zone and caught by a camera, they'll give you the first 5km "free" and you'll get the bill for 5km over. should cost you CHF 40.

drive carefully, the cameras are everywhere and it is simply not worth the money to shave 10 seconds off the typical commute.

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

It should cost you between 20-60chf, if you actually receive a ticket. Pretty cheap by Swiss standards.

I've been flashed 3 times at similar speeds and have never received a ticket. YMMV.

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

I got flashed coming out of Basel on the A2 before Christmas, I was doing 88 in an 80km area.

I got a notification of a fine the other day for 20chf.

OP says she has Brit plates. The bill may find it's way back through the bureaucracy to the registered UK address eventually, but the user name would be held here in case the fine isn't paid. Next border check or road check here in Switzerland and the plate or user name will pop up. It happens.

first have you declared the car to the swiss? if they have a record of your number plate then expect something.

If not i wouldnt worry too much... based on personal experience

the fines depend if you were in town, main road or highway etc.

you are prob looking at a fine in the region of 60-120chf. switzerland does not have a points system BTW.

yes you can get huge fines here especially if its in a 50 zone so be careful.

I agree with you and I am always ready to help and give tips. But these days we seem to have a lot of one time shot newbies (aka trolls?) who come and ask the same exact question discussed recently ( in that week, that day) so please forgive my suspicions.

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

Miss Sunshie gives her location as France, so the car hasn't necessarily been/nor need to be declared to the authorities in Switzerland.
The swiss will chase the plates through the DVLA and contact her home address, which is possibly still listed as in the UK?
Hopefully there's someone there to forward the post.

Happened to hubby a few years ago (parking fine though, not speeding), they traced him eventually.... took months.
Don't worry too much, it won't be a huge fine if they do find you, 40-100 chf probably, although they might take a point or three. But please; SLOW DOWN!

Re: New to Switzerland and think I've just been caught speeding

Just looked around a bit.
http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/741_031/app1.html

"Driving on a bus lane: 60 CHF".
Yikes.

And much more stuff I didn't even think about.

Seems that the most important rule is really "Don't get caught"....

Driving in a bus lane is a serious offence. It's not 'don't get caught' but 'Don't do it'.
