| | | Aussie girl in Gais/St Gallen
Hi!
I'm an 18year old Australian who moved to Gais, near St Gallen at the start of the year to work as an au pair.
So far, the cold weather has kept me in the house (I'd never even seen snow before!) but am looking forward to getting out and about, seeing and trying new things. I'm also desperately looking for a netball team, as volleyball left me bruised and sore...
I'm also keen to check out some Australian restaurants - I think there's one in Wintherthur?

Welcome to the forum!
There is the "Outback Lodge" and the "Billabong".
I've never been to the Billabong but I have been to the Outback Lodge in Zurich. I don't like it too much because they seem to try too hard to be aussie and I've never seen any Australians in there either...
But I guess you just need to try it... |

heya, welcome to the forum. There are a few aussies in Zurich, myself included. I know a few aussie au pairs. if u want me to hook u up with them lemme know.
As for aussie restaurants, the only thing aussie about the outback in stadelhofen and winterthur is that they serve aussie game meat (kangaroo, emu etc) and they have a selection of aussie beers. Thats where the aussieness ends. The layout is over the top cheesy aussie, designed for the european tourist rather than the aussie market.

Welcome to Cheeseville Miss Claire.
Yeah as the others pointed out, the 'Outback'..... best not to bother.
I find more pleasure in baking my own meat pies. And apparently they are better than then ones back home....
Good luck settling in, where from Oz are you ? I moved here from Brisvegas and Airlie Beach before that, big change of scenery I tell ya....
Also, viel glück und alles guete....

CARN EAGLES !!!!!
Ok so meat pie recipie ay. Pretty easy actually. Finding the tins is the only hard part. I brought mine back from Oz but the have party pie size in Migros...
Basically I fry up a half kilo of minced beef then drain off the fat.
Then dice a large onion and fry it up with salt n pepper.
In denner they have 'Rindsragout' which I slice up smaller and fry till brown.
The following measurements I'm not sure of. I just go by taste and consistency (I like mine quite peppery).
Add about 2 cups of half of water and (also from denner) 150gm 'Braten sauce' (gravey) powder and a packet of pepper sauce powder.
Cook it all up so it's a thick sauce consistency. You've eaten plenty of pies I'm guessing so you know what to aim for.
The pastry you'll also find in Denner (my favourite shop for food in case you haven't guessed) it's called 'Blatterteig'
Allow the filling to cool down before making the pies. I simply put the pot in the fridge for a couple of hours and give it a stir a couple of times...
Oh and lightly oil the pie tins before laying the pastry in and once you've put the tops on give them a stab or 2 with a fork to allow the steam to escape. And don't overfill or you'll make a mess of the oven and they'll stick around the edges....
En guete zäme !!!

Hi I'm a Hawks fan and the last game I saw was at MCG last Easter. Lost in front of 90,000+ crowd to the Cats. Ouch, and I was there with in-laws from Geelong.
I live and work near/in Winterthur and there is a regular Winti expats Meetup.com (expats-in-Winterthur). Not that close to you (where is Gais?) but civilized :-)
There's a new arrivals next Friday -10th at Paddy's at 18.00.
Unfortunately I won't be there (cos if you're from Geelong you prob support the Cats). The organizer Neale is likely to be there specially if you contact him in advance.
Enjoy Switzerland .. no Jan Juc beaches but the mountains are spectacular.

Go the CATS!
Thanks Lisa, a meet up sounds good, I'll just check out how easily I can get to Winterthur.
And thanks Chrisso for the recipe! I'll see how I go, and if I can tempt the people I'm living with to try it! (the Vegemite remains untouched in the cupboard...)
