I really am appreciating this forum a lot!!

People so far have been very helpful! I don't know yet it Switzerland will be the posting (they seem to be juggling two posts in Europe, hope to have some definition soon!), but if it is, I am glad to have found a good resource for information and pleasant advice!

You are absolutely correct. Looking at homegate.ch and others, most applicable apartments are at least an hour away by public transport (time frames checked with google maps and sbb). So I will probably have to consider an annual pass!

This is because we do want to have our 5 cats with us and are willing to compromise a bit on my commuting time (not that much though!).

However, having lived in gridlocked countries, 1 hour commute is pretty doable in my mind! And I'd welcome the walks for the exercise! LOL

Shouldn't be too much of a problem unless you're travelling at the beginning of March when the Geneva Motor Show is on, then the trains will be pretty crowded, even though SBB put on extra services.

I know you haven't got any fixed posting yet but if you read a bit of the housing section you will find that it is difficult here to be chosen for an appartment. The person renting the place would need to choose you, your family (and your five cats) above all other candidates. Many private owners would look for someone long term and who fits in with the other tenants/families in the building, not cause hassle or damage etc.

Not intending to put you off, just advice well meant, before you make an important decision.

Unfortunately I know this. However, also to my disadvantage, I do NOT pick my posting, it is decided for me. That's what led me to the forum in the first place, I am taking preventive steps, so to speak.

I will of course carry references from my current and, if I manage it since they live abroad, my previous landlords, since they have all been happy with my tenancy including my cats!

If it happens to be Switzerland, I will endeavor to find the best option. Thankfully if that is the case I have two colleagues at the mission so I will ask for their help, and I will travel at least 2 months in advance to my wife and cats, so that helps a bit (not much, but better than nothing!)
