Explore Bern

I am planning to move from London to work in Bern. Before I make a final decision, I am planning a 2 day trip next week to explore Bern and to have a feel around the place. Can anyone suggest the best way to do this and what are the things I should look out for? Is it possible to go around in the town by public transport and how?

Thanks

Re: Explore Bern

Have you got accommodation sorted - this would be a good place to start if you wanted to structure your day and so have a look around the areas between wherever you work and the Hauptbahnhof so you can make those Friday night getaways.
Bern has a wonderful public transport system - the machines (which across all of CH can be switched to English just in case you don't know the lingo) will sell tickets for all sorts of trips from a bus ride to a trip to Paris (though you might want to talk to the travel centre about that - which can be found in the main station).
The centre of Bern has many bus and tram lines, there is a regional light railway which covers the satellite towns, if you are travelling in and out of town then you should get a Tageskarte as you will be on and off the busses etc.
Where will you be working, you might find someone on here who can give you an idea of the best quartier in which to stay?

Kirchenfeld is a nice area. It's where all the embassies and consulates are.

Area will depend whether you're single or moving with your family.
Also, you can also choose to live just outside the city -- e.g. Muri bei Bern is full of expats with families
