Floridians moving to CH, maybe

We are a family of 4 living in Florida and a potential job offer for my husband which would bring us to Luzern. I am dual citizen Swiss/US and so are our children. My husband is a university teacher in hospitality and is considering a job at an International Hotel School. We are excited and hope to get the job and matching offer to move our family over there. We have alot of questions and some concerns and hope that this community will be able to help us.

So far the information I have read in the forums is excellent and it is of comfort to know that there is such a large Expat community to turn to.

Re: Floridians moving to CH, maybe

You do realise that the cost of living is roughly 10x that of FL?

Re: Floridians moving to CH, maybe

Thank you for the welcome, things are still in the preliminary stages for us as the first round of interviews just took place. We are familiar with the cost of living as we have visited family often in Switzerland. We are fortunate that we have family and friends over there who will hopefully be able to help us as we get situated and adjust.

Compensation packages haven't been discussed and we are a bit concerned as the school may not follow the "standard" wages for industries or positions in Switzerland but we will cross that bridge as we get there.

We do have some HR/Employment type questions but will go the Employment forum to ask them.

If you haven't settled on a final figure yet, then also think about the US tax situation and what claims/exemptions you might be able to negotiate for to go on your US tax return. FATCA will be implemented soon and the banks aren't that keen on Americans at the moment so expect you might have a problem getting a bank account; it's also affecting dual nationals such as yourself.

Think about it this way...even if the compensation package is not ideal...just remember the obvious benefits of living in Switzerland. Especially living in the Luzern area.

We left the US and had, whats on paper, an obvious increase of net income. It was around a 50% income boost. However, this 50% increase has yet to make it into our savings accounts.

I think the most noticeable changes for us was the cost of restaurants and living in an apartment. We used to go out twice a week...now its more like twice a month. With respect to daily living, i don't think the prices of groceries, fuel, and other consumables are that much different in the end. Of course food costs more...but considering you will leave the awesome giant US refrigerator behind...you will certainly waste less. As for living in an apartment...I've quickly grown accustomed to not maintaining a proper garden.

My bulk recommendation, if the compensation package is 35-45% more than what your US income is...all should be well.
