Greek / English family new to Shaffhausen!

Hello everyone,
We are a family of 6, I am Greek, my husband is English and we have 4 kids, the older is 12 and the youngest 4.
We will be moving near Schaffhousen in 2015 (I will start working in Shaffhausen for a multinational company 1st September and I will be travelling back and forward to London weekly until we are ready to relocate the entire family, hopefully around March 2015)
My objective is to put the kids in local schools and I would like to meet other English speaking families with young children. My older boys have already started learning German to help them integrate with other kids at school. The little ones will learn the language easier I believe.
My company said that they will provide me with all the information I need but I would really appreciate some help in terms of best canton to live (Schaffhausen or Zurich?) school admissions process, English speaking kindergarten and after school clubs etc

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thank you so much!
A x

Re: Greek / English family new to Shaffhausen!

Hi A

All the best with your planning! We haven't actually arrived yet :-) but will do in July and we will be living the other side of the Rhine in Flurlingen. Our kids will go to school there (luckily are bi-lingual English/German). I believe that you are allocated a local school once you register at your local Gemeinde (town council office), once you have found somewhere to rent/buy, so which school you get depends on where you actually live. For property searches I would recommend Homegate.ch and the website also has a Steuerrechner (tax calculator) so you can look at the differences in tax you would pay in the different districts/cantons. We will be better off in Flurlingen than in Schaffhausen!

I can't help with after school-clubs. I will find out all the extra info once the kids are at school and established and then will see what their classmates do!

I suggest you read Living and working in Switzerland by David Hampshire which will save you hours of internet research and also Swiss Watching by Diccon Bewes which is brilliant.

Good Luck x

Taxes are higher in Kanton SH but the rent often lower and vice versa. It is a beautiful area so you canīt go wrong much.

Frida, I can introduce you to some families with kids in Flurlingen, a couple of my best friends live there (and we can catch up for a chat in the Frohsinn, if you would like to have a chat in Dutch, that is?)

Hi Roegner, that sounds great! Unfortunately my Dutch is pretty rubbish but my kids speak it like the Flemish kids they go to school with and my daughter would love some Dutch-speaking friends having done all her schooling up to age 9 1/2 here. We have lots of Dutch friends and often holiday in Zeeland and on Ameland. Now that we will miss!

Re: Greek / English family new to Shaffhausen!

Hi there,

Hope you'll read my message.
We're also a mixed family of 4, I'm Greek, my husband is English and we'll be moving to Switzerland if anything goes well sometime this summer.
Still trying to figure out many things, but the job offer was in Zurich so it'll be somewhere around there...

Message me if you read this maybe we can meet up
Our kids are 6 and 2

Take care!

Re: Greek / English family new to Shaffhausen!

Hello Anastasia
Unfortunately things did not work out very well for us.
We decided to cancel the move 5 months down the line as we realised that Switzerland would not be the right place to live.
I did quit my job in Shaffhausen and returned back to London. We are much happier here.
Wishing you all the best
A.
