Indian Moving from San Francisco To Lausanne

Hello Everyone,

I will be moving from San Francisco, California to Lausanne towards the end of October 2014. Currently, I work in one of the welll known IT companies. I am moving to academics and will be joining for postdoctorate position in Lausanne.

I am married and will be moving with my wife who is a homemaker. I love travelling, reading about history and listening to classical music. I am originally from India and have been living in US since last four years.

I found this forum very informative about various aspects of living in Switzerland. I started reading the existing posts since for most of the questions I have in mind, I am sure someone would have already posted a reply.

My professor in Lausanne under whose guidance I am going to work from October said that there is an initial "entry barrier" which everyone who is relocating to Switzerland has to undergo. Until that barrier is crossed, life might look hard and difficult. But once that barrier is crossed, living in Switzerland is like dream come true.

With the help of everyone on this forum, I hope to cross that barrier as fast as I can and become part of Lausanne.

I take this opportunity to say hello to everyone on this forum and thank everyone who painstakingly reply to questions in the greatest detail.

With the little french I learnt using the "Duolingo" app, I close this introduction with 'Bonjour' and 'Au revoir'.

Thank you.

Re: Indian Moving from San Francisco To Lausanne

welcome to the forum, Lausanne is a beautiful place, and very international (european standards) due to universities etc. Also Geneva has a pretty decent expat population.

I recently stayed in east Bay area for 5 months or so, and was quite happy living there due to various conveniences (shops open late, more options for restaurants, excellent sporting facilities). My favourite was spending weekends in Monterey (excellent fish & chips).

I was currently debating whether I should move to Bay area

Lausanne and surrounding are very nice, lots of places to go, but coming from Bay area I think the "entry barrier" would be to tone down your expectations a bit. But it no doubt is an excellent place to live.

Good luck with the move, and you would find this forum quite helpful on almost any topic

Re: Indian Moving from San Francisco To Lausanne

The biggest concern I have about relocating to Lausanne, of course, is being able to find proper housing once I relocate. So if you know of any places that will become available from late October or early November or later that fit the following criterion, please DM me: (i) 2 bed room, 2 bath room, (ii) easily accessible by public transport to EPFL/UNIL area. I have excellent credit score in US if it helps . My professor said that they will give a wonderful recommendation letter that I am a very nice person etc and I am indeed a very nice person . I will be staying in Lausanne for at least 3 years. So I can sign up for long term lease if required.

@3Wishes, @SOBEIT: Thank you for the messages.

@Newbee: Thank you for the reply. Yes, I heard this before. Bay Area is wonderful. But it has its share of problems. Traffic and lack of public transport, in my opinion, is the biggest. I am surprised that you find the sporting facilities in Bay Area better than that of Lausanne, given that it is the Olympic capital.

Thank you!

Re: Indian Moving from San Francisco To Lausanne

take a look at

http://www.homegate.ch/

there should be some places near EPFL/UNIL, but be prepared to pay 1600-2000 for a 2 bedroom (depends on the location like in Bay area), you could go to Renens (which might remind you a little of Oakland, though not at that scale) 2 bedroom should be 1600 or so (atleast that is how it was 6 years ago), or live in Morges, Saint Sulpice (2 bedroom would be 2000+, but walking distance to EPFL (St. Sulpice)).

You could also ask your lab's admin to help you as well, and usually there are number of advertisement on the campus, which sometimes are easier to get ..

As far as sports facilities are concerned, there is a 1 hall (always crowded) Gym in UNIL, and a number of too-expensive-for-its-value Gyms in the city; but as we know cost to value argument is very personal.

And yes, you do not need any public transport for most of the travels (specially within the city), if you would want to see nicer places both in Switzerland, and in France, germany, Italy etc; a car comes in handy. We found travelling with kids on trains expensive as well as not so convenient. But you would not use your car as much (but if you have one, pay decent car insurance nevertheless).

Also, one more thing, for health insurance, I think as postdoc you could still get student insurance (check with the lab and other phd/post-docs, and see what they recommend), health insurance is pretty expensive (decent cover would cost you approx 400 CHF/adult, 100-150 per child).

Anyways, Lausanne is one of my favorite places, I would not hesitate a second if I have to go back to Lausanne, and I am sure you would like it; so good luck with your move

Hi there !
Namaste
I am an Indian too !! I would be moving to Lausanne for my Masters at UNIL. I am just so apprehensive and excited at the same time.
Finding an accommodation is very hard ! Let me know if you come across anything like a single room or something.
Looking forward to everything !

Hello and welcome from a fellow Indian.

We lived in Lausanne for quite sometime before moving to a close by village recently. Do not hesitate to send a pm or an email if you need some info.

Good luck with your move.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Sorry for the delay in replying. I had to travel and had only sporadic access to email and internet.

Hi Catcher In The Rye,

I realize its been a few months since your OP and your move to CH. I will be relocating from the US to Geneva in a few months and was wondering if you might have any recommendations for an international moving/shipping company? If you had a good experience with your moving company, would you please let me know - I am in the process of exploring international movers.

Thanks a lot!
