New to canton Vaud

Hi everyone my name is James I'm 24 and have recently moved from the UK to canton Vaud. Just thought I would introduce myself on the forum to you all.
I always wanted to travel and live in Europe so early this year I decided to move to Switzerland to see what life is like living abroad. I am enjoying the country lots and think it's so beautiful here. I have set myself up with work permit and insurance etc and even found myself a job within one month of being here, working in a local marina.
I joined this forum as I would love to make some English speaking friends here. I do enjoy life here but it is a little lonely without being able to see any friends and I miss a good English conversation. I speak only basic french so communicating with people here has been difficult for me and I find the language quite hard.
It would be great to hear from anyone other English speakers living in canton Vaud. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and hope to hear from some of you soon

Hi James, welcome to the Forum. By any chance, do you live close to Lausanne or Geneva? You can find some English-speaking people in those cities. There are also a quite a few meetups there (on the meetup.com), which are geared toward English-speaking folks.

Hope this helps.

I wonder when they moved the UK out of Europe. Where did they move it to? Asia?

Well, I can see that the UK is practically a suburb of the US.

I'm nearer to Lausanne.

What do you do at the marina?

Wow, Gimel, very beautiful, but really the end of the earth.

No wonder you are in need of friends and good conversation.

If I was 24, there is no way I would live in Gimel no matter how beautiful. Have you considered moving to either Geneva or Lausanne? Sorry to say, unless you are a farmer, Gimel is not going to be anyplace exciting, ever.

Hope you have a car?, if so go to Geneva or Lausanne for the night life, at least get down the mountain to Nyon or Morges, which are semi-civilzation.

Explore your interests and hobbys, get involved in some groups or associations per your interests.

Haha yeah that's true!

Aww cool how do you find life here do you like it? Some days I love it here others I miss England.

It's a small marina in Rolle, we up keep customers boats and launch them when they want them for the weekend and do mechanic work on them in the winter months.
Sounds kinda boring I know haha but it's a job for now. It's kind of hard for me to get any other work as I don't speak French very well :/

Yes gimel is the middle of no where but I like the country side, I'm nit really a city person. I don't really like Geneva if I'm honest. Lausanne is very nice. I prefer the mountains. I visited villars sur ollon last week and thought that was paradise.
I came to Switzerland for the scenery and mountains nit the night life. I did the night life stuff in England.
But you are very true, gimel is not great for meeting friends as I've found out

It sounds great to me. Better than sitting in an office!

Try glocals.com for events and meet ups. They do a lot of outdoor stuff at the weekends.

Good luck settling in.

Me? geez no one ever asks about me! How long you got? I was born in a small village in Borneo.... Not really. But I've been here a long time and I do love living here. So if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I used to commute to Nyon. But have never worked in Rolle. It's a lovely little village. Do you know if they rent SUP boards down there?

Aww haha well I'm asking about you I'd love to know how you found adjusting to life here and how you made friends etc
Thank you for you help I think for me I'm not really fully enjoying life here I want a friend to share things with and who will do water sorts and hiking and horse riding with me. Sometimes I'm nit sure it was right for me to come here. I don't know. I'm going to give it one year and see how things go.
And cool nyon is nice, what do you work as?
And I'm not sure if they rent them there but il check it out this week and let you know

It's too early for you to decide yet!
TBH, the transition for me was a bit difficult even though I came with my husband and was a bit older than you are now. Mostly because I'm not all that outdoorsy. The good news for you is that there are soooo many outdoor things here and so many people who love that kind of thing that you'll have no problem meeting people. IMO.

Do look at the glocals site. There is a hike of some sort every weekend. Reserve early because they fill up quickly. And lots of other outdoor activities.

In Nyon there is a nice expat bar called the Fisherman or something like that (Maybe?).

Give it some time and start doing French lessons even if it's online. Really, from what you write I think you'll like it here once you get in your groove!

Bienvenue en Suisse !
Switzerland can't compete with England in terms of night life, but cities like Lausanne (Vaud) and Geneva have a nice array of bars.
You might want to consider getting a general abonnement, which is essentially a season ticket letting you use any public bus, train, or boat in Switzerland. In Lausanne you can always hear English being spoken in bars such as 'Étoile Blanche,' 'Happy Days,' 'Captain Cook,' 'The Great Escape,' etc. They tend to get really busy from Thursday to Saturday and the staff are all friendly.
Have you considered taking French classes? They can be a great way to meet other expats.
