Why doesn't this website have a Very Important People section; and entry to that section is granted only when a person has over 1000 posts. Then you can go there and laugh at us and we can in peace seek advice on nannies and make friends with people who don't feel superior to us.
We already have that gr ... err I mean Cos then who would be left to answer your questions?

It made perfect sense when it was started. Maybe. Nah, probably not.

I am a newbie. I joined here to receive advice and find similar minded people to meet in real life and have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee with. I can see in this thread that you find me and other newbies hilarious. We are "annoying" with our questions. I get it. I'm not offended. I do get it. You arrived in Switzerland before us; or even were born here. You have spent hours of your life on this website. If I pile those hours together some of you have spent cumulative months of your lives on this website- you feel superior. You feel better. You are tired of watching newbies join over and over and ask questions about supermarkets.
I have a possible solution for this situation. Why doesn't this website have a Very Important People section; and entry to that section is granted only when a person has over 1000 posts. Then you can go there and laugh at us and we can in peace seek advice on nannies and make friends with people who don't feel superior to us.

It is not about being superior.
Here is the thing about the EF imho:
There is google, there is search functions ,there is the phone,
there is common sense of going out in the world and asking things. People come on here and blatantly ask there question which has been easily answered many times before or can be adapted to fit their issue. Then they ask 1 question, never to be seen again or contribute to the forum with issues other people might have. You'd be surprised (and I speak out of experience) how supportive this forum and its real contributors really are in times of need.

So if you put in an effort people will be all over to welcome you. again nothing to do with feeling superior. and yes as this forum is part of many of us daily life a joke will be cracked every now and then.

I can first hand attest to how helpful most people on this forum are. I have received excellent tailored advises and have had people taking their time to listen to me, when I felt lost. That is why I am here. That is why I am trying to make it an even BETTER place. I already love being part of this forum and I am sure I will contribute and most importantly SUPPORT others in the future. I do hope so.

The superior feeling may not apply to you. I am sure it doesn't apply to a lot of the forum members. From time to time, some comments reek like it though and there is absolutely no other word that would describe it better.

I think that you are missing THE POINT. There are different "levels" of questions with the expectation that the person who is asking the most basic of questions has "at least made an attempt" to find the answer by using the search function/advanced search function. Do you think it is fun for the people who give FREELY of their time, knowledge and expertise to have to answer the same questions such as "do I have to pay Billag" (you will understand that one once you are here).

More "advanced" questions asking for advice when options are know, or at least partially known or the previous answer seems dated are VERY welcomed. In your case you were asking for a comparison of three places to live - a fair question since there are many elements (in addition to your school question) that will need to be factored in.

There are many LAZY people who consider EF their personal Google. This is not (unless they are really stupid) a Newbie bashing forum.

People are here to help but not be abused. Make sense?

Makes sense. Although I must admit that before reading all this explanation, just from the topic itself, I did feel bashed. I even considered leaving the forum for some weeks to "cool down" till I forget as I noticed that I may never easily ask any questions again. It felt like swimming with sharks; if you are not a bit careful your leg is gone.

As long as think before you ask a question, and it's not totally ridiculous, then you should be fine. Sometimes the same question is asked time and time again, hence the "use the search" remarks, people are just bored of writing the same answer a hundred times. But occasionally questions deserve dumb answers, like "The course I'm applying to says I need to be C1 in German, I am A2, will I be ok?"

Re: Questions

Look at the question on this EF thread, Where to learn Deutsch near Bern (Bahnhof) or in any near bahnhof station in Bern

A good EF member gave him a list of all the language schools in Bern. You would think that anyone would take a map, (paper or on-line), and decide himself which school is nearest to the station. No, he came back and bleated that Bern is big and which school is nearest.

I answered his question to shut him up, but I was sorely tempted to answer differently.
