Hello from NZ

Gruezi! I'm an Irishman living in New Zealand and as I found myself a lovely Swiss\Kiwi lady here we're thinking of moving to Switzerland while our family is very young so I can experience life there and be able to travel around Europe for work. Hopefully in the next 1-2 years.

I have visited Zurich twice before and last time went to her family home near Schaffhausen which I loved. We also visited Winterthur. Only had time for this short trip but while in Schaffhausen I proposed and she said yes! So I would love to find a place to live in the countryside near Schaffhausen and enjoy rural living, but still be near a nice pub for a pint of beer now and then!

I know some high school German so the priority for me now is to do a Gothie course at nighttime but also try learn the unique Zurich-Swiss that my partner and her father can speak. I can understand quite a lot but I must get better before we move. I can't find much Swiss-German online course material so just want to immerse myself by listening to SRF1

Would be keen to get in contact with other Irish expats in Switzerland, in particular in Winterthur, Schaffhausen or Zurich as I think I'll be basing us somewhere there.

Life is about experiencing new things, New Zealand has been great but I feel the need to experience more history, culture and music then there is to offer here, and it will be nice to be somewhere central to easily fly around Europe for work and for run.

Merci Vilmal!

Re: Hello from NZ

Excellent, Atlantic252!
You will make it in Switzerland!

I say this because I wonder if you realise how many times those of us who are settled in here, for the long haul, try to encourage and motivate the new immigrants to learn German. And here you are, all fired up, and posting about your already taking steps to learn the language!

Thank you. You made my day!

Re: Hello from NZ

moving companies from NZ to CH?
User Kiwi2Swiss is already going through the steps you have in mind for in a year or two’s time. I’d suggest you read all her threads, from the start.

Also the thread of k_nz Kiwi moving from Auckland, NZ to Aargau although I wouldn’t recommend you plunge right into a Kiwi ex-pat scene here, nor an Irish one, but instead work your hardest to get to know Swiss people and speak German. Perhaps even simply avoid English-Speakers for the first 6 months or year you live here... that can work wonders!

Ich wünsche Dir alles Gute!

BUT near Schaffhausen, close to a S-Bahn-Station of the S.-5 you may be confronted with Schaffuuserisch, and expressions like
Da da da da ? da da da ?
or
a Zaane voll Saaffe d Laatere abschlaapfe

and here a nice info in ächtäm Schaffuuserisch

Hi there! welcome to Switzerland - it's a great place to live & great you are thinking of moving. Just to let you know there are a lot of foreign English speaking people in Zurich & Zug not too sure about Schaffhausen. It is much harder to Lear Swiss German and nearly not possible because of the pronouncing correctly. I'm already 7 years over here and still can't and did try as well First . I wish you and your little family all the very best. Puce

There nowadays are lots of English speaking people in Schaffhausen and Standard German is in a far stronger position in Schaffhausen than anywhere else in Switzerland -- for obvious reasons
