Re: looking for other english speaking seniors

If your mother is an English speaker who has lived here 50 years she might already be a member (I say this because 'back in the day', ZIWA was one of the few opportunities for international women to connect with one another) - but if not, she might be interested in the Zürich International Women's Association:

www.ziwa.com

While this is not a group for seniors - ZIWA members are all ages - there are nonetheless many women who are older, have lived in Switzerland for decades, who might share your mother's interests.

ZIWA's activities are quite varied: book clubs, music, art, discussion groups, bridge, food and cooking, hiking and other sports, travel, coffee mornings, etc. There's something for everyone, and your mother could be as involved (or not) as she wished.

The language of the club is English, and most activities center around Zürich city.

---

Since you are in the US - is your mother an American? If so, there is also the American Women's Club of Zürich. Again, not for seniors only, the membership covers a wide age range - but she will likely find friends with common interests. In addition to their various activities, AWCZ also has a library of English language books - your mother might enjoy an afternoon browsing...

The AWCZ clubhouse is in the neighborhood of Bahnhof Selnau:

ETA:

Another resource is the Senior University of UniZH
http://www.seniorenuni.uzh.ch/index.html

This a program of courses (non-diploma) and lectures for anyone over 60. While most of the program is indeed in German, occasionally some courses/lectures are offered in English. For instance, this coming up:
http://www.seniorenuni.uzh.ch/servic...meetswest.html

Auditing a class is a wonderful way to connect with others who share your interests - your mother might meet some very enjoyable people this way.

---

What town is your mother in? If you let us know, we could point to some specific resources in her area...

Re: looking for other english speaking seniors

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Great post by Meloncollie with some good pointers.
I`m not sure also if this would help but my Mother, who lives in England and is in her 80`s, is an extremely active member of U3A (University of the 3rd Age). This is a global organisation for retired people who want something a lot more stimulating than just bingo.
She organises and give talks on many topics and has even represented a UK delegation at the European parliament. It seems that they are active in Switzerland and there may even be an English speaking group. Have a look at the link below and in the meantime I will try to find out more for you.

Re: looking for other english speaking seniors

How nice of you to join for your Mother's sake. My Mother is in her 80s and after a health scare a few years ago, she finally moved out of her house into an independent living building with those her own age. She's not lonely anymore and found a fella who is a widower and they have become BFFs and spend all day together even though he lives in another apt. Has your Mother considered such an arrangement there?

I would love to spend some time with your Mother but I live in Basel so would have to travel to Zurich to see her. I am in the midst of a move from the states and it will be nearly impossible for me to get there anytime in the next month or so but after that, would be possible for me. I think the suggestions here have been great and hope that she can find some companionship soon. It's terrible to be alone and it is not good for their health either. At that age, relationships are very important.

I am quite fond of the elderly. As a child I befriended the couple that lived across the street from us and they became my God parents. I was about 7 and they were in their 60s and were childless and our relationship gave us all great joy.
